Move Over “Little Free Library,” Here Comes The Cool Rock Swap

Almost everyone knows what a Little Free Library is. You probably have one in your city. Books aren’t for everyone, so one creative person decided to use the same concept to swap rocks. The Cool Rock Swap is located in Washington state. It works just like a free library — bring a rock, take a rock. @kaylaphelps Probably the coolest thing to accidentally find. Especially as a rockhound #rock #rockhound #rockhounding #crystals #crystaltok ♬ I Collect Rocks – Al Simmons Many rock collectors begin at an early age. Toddlers will fill every pocket with rocks they find outside. Sometimes they gift these precious finds to special people, while others are found when their mom washes their clothes. My daughter is 23, and I still have some of the precious gifts she gave me. Kayla Phelps is an adult rock hound and avid thrifter. She was in a state of bliss when she found the cool rock swap booth. Although this might be the fanciest rock swap setup, there are others scattered around in odd places. Image from Instagram. Sidewalk Joy is a program that monitors small pop-ups for various swaps and also visual, hands-off displays, including mugs, puzzles, toys, seeds, and more. The project began in Portland, Oregon, with a dinosaur diorama set up by Rachael Harms Mahlandt. While touring the town with her children in search of socially distanced activities, she found Sidewalk Ducks, The Car Library, a Tiny Creature Swap, and the Morrison Street Mini Gallery. Rachael began an Instagram page for her diorama. From that, someone suggested creating a map of the tiny pop-ups. That map is now worldwide and shows many of the rock swaps and other pop-ups. The map only offers cross streets, so you’ll still have to search some. If you enjoy discovering hidden gems, this is an excellent way to add to your list. Please share.
