Animals in the wild provide their own enrichment during basic existence, namely the struggle for survival. While in captivity, those natural forms of enrichment aren’t available, so zookeepers try to provide the new stimulation in other ways. These activities may take several forms, from hiding food, which encourages foraging, to playful interaction with keepers. Hoofstock Supervisor Sierra Smith at Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard, Kansas, strives to provide unique enrichment activities for her charges. It seemed to want interaction, but it may have been ready to chase the intruder away. There was a quick game of hide-and-seek. The rhino appeared more interactive and curious than aggressively chasing the inflatable to and fro. It is possible that the rhino recognized Sierra in the costume since her face is visible. These huge animals may not seem too bright, but they’re pretty smart. When the crew tried a weeble-wobble, he completely ignored it in favor of playing with the hose. Their female, Monica, was more accepting of the weeble-wobble.
