Keith Urban Fans Think This “You’ll Think Of Me” Lyric Change Is A Shot At Nicole Kidman… Even Though He’s Performed It Like This For Years
Getting into character or unleashing some personal feelings into those lyrics?
Last week, news broke that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman had separated, and as TMZ reported, the two have been living apart since the beginning of summer when Keith moved out. Sources tell the news outlet that Nicole has been taking care of their two children and is “holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone.” The source added that Kidman was trying her hardest to save the marriage, making Urban’s decision to move out one-sided.
While many fans hoped they would find their way back to each other, they were heartbroken when news broke that Kidman had officially filed for divorce from the country star, which was first reported by TMZ and later confirmed by People.
Since the divorce, there has been some back and forth between the two parties about who feels hurt and who has allegedly already moved on. Of course, now fans and social media sleuths are reading into every little thing that is happening between the two, trying to piece together a narrative of what led to the breakup.
With this mentality, fans are specifically reading into how Urban is performing some of his songs while he’s on the road. Urban fans ripped him to shreds in the comments section after he changed a lyric of “The Fighter” to reference his utility guitar player, Maggie Baugh. There is some speculation that Baugh and Urban are romantically involved, but this is just hearsay, with no factual support to substantiate the claim.
However, even if Urban was having fun on stage and doing his job to entertain, fans took the lighthearted moment and went scorched earth on him, saying how disrespectful that lyric change was to Nicole Kidman. Mind you, this performance occurred before news broke of their separation, so all was fine and dandy until that information became public, which then altered the perception of Urban’s motive for changing the lyric.
Now, fans are reading into his passionate performance of “You’ll Think Of Me” from a recent show in Virginia. While singing the chorus of the song, Urban added the line that has fans convinced he’s referencing Kidman.
“Take your records, take your freedom
Take your memories, I don’t need them
Take your space and your bullsh** reasons
But you’ll think of me
And take your cat and leave my sweater
‘Cause we have nothing left to weather
In fact I’ll feel a whole lot better
But you’ll think of me….”
Typically, the line that he changed is “Take your space and take your reasons,” so it’s a very slight change.

It did not take long for folks online to jump to conclusions, commenting things like:
“Wow- he’s angry.. His ex-wife clearly got the good hair straightener in the divorce.”
“Keith Urban crashing out on stage was not on my 2025 Bingo card.”
“Orrrrrrrr….. hear me out. He’s a selfish narcissist addict. Who is trying to re write the narrative.”
“Recovering addict here. I think he’s relapsed, that crash out looks fueled by something else.”
“I’ve seen him a couple times, when he was sober. He’s not sober now.”
“A good father would never disrespect his children’s mother.”
“He is singing with anger which says to me… there is more to this story than what everyone thinks, and it’s not all Keith …”
Then other social media users pointed out that he has been singing “You’ll Think Of Me” with a fiery passion for years.
“HE HAS SANG THESE LINES AT EVERY SHOW THE LAST 20 YEARS “
“For reference: he has literally sang this extra verse for 15 years!”
“It’s really clear in the comments who has been to his shows and who are trying to draw conclusions from one video. He has always performed with this passion!”
And these comments are not wrong.
Urban has always gotten into character during his songs, frequently adding extra verses at shows and delivering the lyrics with a fiery passion. Of course, that could be amplified, given the events in his personal life, but Urban remains the entertainer he has always been at the end of the day. And part of the job of being in the entertainment business is to sell the words you are singing… he’s doing just that.
The internet loves to act like it knows what’s going on in famous folks’ personal lives…
Check out this passionate performance from 2023 before you go.
