Republican lawmakers in Indiana are considering an effort to redraw its congressional map after a meeting with Vice President J.D. Vance. Mike Braun is expected to make a decision soon and is likely to call a special session for redistricting, according to people familiar with his thinking. Braun could choose a date around Organization Day in November, when state legislators would already be traveling to the state capitol. Indiana holds significant opportunity for Republicans in the redistricting wars unfolding around the country. The GOP could target Indiana’s two Democratic representatives, creating a 9-0 delegation for Republicans. “Every day, every week, it moves in that direction because when you look at our political competitors, they’re pretty well gerrymandered across every state they control,” Braun told reporters this week, according to WFYI. “A lot of this is to kind of even the playing field, so we’ll see,” he added. “Following @POTUS’ bold leadership, I was the first elected official in Indiana to publicly support redistricting. Braun said he doesn’t have a timeline for a possible special session of the General Assembly, adding that they’re still working on it. The governor was also asked about the federal government shutdown’s impact on Hoosiers. “All the essential services associated with Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, those go on,” Braun said. He added that services that are suspended should be reviewed to see if they could be made more efficient. The former U.S. senator called the current level of federal borrowing unsustainable. “We’re going to need to collectively find out how much we’re willing to borrow and spend, or do we want to return more of those responsibilities to the states where they can do it more efficiently?” Earlier this week, Kansas lawmakers met to approve $460,000 in taxpayer dollars to cover an anticipated special session to redistrict the state’s congressional map. The Sunflower State currently has three Republicans and one Democrat in its congressional delegation. It’s believed a new congressional map in Kansas will increase the odds of flipping the lone Democrat seat in Kansas to Republican.
