At J-Mar Sportfishing, shark sightings are fairly common. When you’re out on the water at the Hudson Canyon off the New Jersey coast, that happens. It is not common for a whale shark to intentionally ram the side of the boat. When a large whale shark swam beside them, all hands had eyes on the large, docile marine animal. As they watched, the whale shark changed direction and swam right into the side of the fishing boat. This behavior is very rare and typically only happens if the boat does something to provoke the whale shark. There is no evidence that the fishermen in this video provoked the animal. They eat plankton and are very non-aggressive. They pose more danger to humans from ramming boats than the possibility of being eaten. These sharks swim very slowly and can live to be 150 years old, but are increasingly endangered. They migrate long distances and survive everywhere except the Mediterranean Sea.
