Flatland Cavalry Celebrate The Ups & Downs Of Life On The Road In Stellar New Single, “Gone”

Easy on the ears and heavy on the heart as always. Undeniably one of the most talented bands in the entire genre, Flatland Cavalry has proven time and again that they’re one of the most exciting groups flying out of the Texas scene today. After scoring major career milestones in 2024, which include receiving their first certified gold record for “A Life Where We Work Out” featuring Kaitlin Butts and their first-ever ACM nomination for Group of the Year, the West Texas powerhouses celebrated their 10-year anniversary together as a band at the end of the year with the release of Flatland Forever, an eventual 40-track collection of their biggest hits, worktapes, commentaries and unreleased tracks such as “Three Car Garage.” Though they’ve had a busy year so far from a touring perspective, selling out stops nearly everywhere on the Flatland Forever Tour and flying up the list of names at high-profile festivals such as Stagecoach, Two Step Inn and Bourbon & Beyond, Flatland has been extremely quiet release-wise throughout 2025. With the end of the year fast approaching, many began wondering if we were going to receive new music at all. Just three weeks after releasing their Billy Bob Thornton co-written track for Landman, “Midland After Midnight,” Flatland is back with their first release off their upcoming record, the brand new single, “Gone.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Flatland Cavalry (@flatlandcavalry) As previously mentioned, it’s been quite a bit since we’ve received truly new music from Flatland. Even when you take Flatland Forever into consideration, a majority of the “new” releases were either work tapes and recordings of long-unreleased tracks from the early days of the band. All of that is to say, there was the potential of Flatland losing a step or two since the release of Wandering Star back in 2023. I’m happy to report that’s simply not the case here on “Gone.” One of the defining characteristics of Flatland Cavalry as a band, beyond Cordero’s masterful songwriting, is the warmth of their sound. Oftentimes, putting on a Flatland record feels more like a warm night around a fire compared to your standard music-listening experience, and that’s showcased beautifully here with heavy doses of fiddle, accordion and acoustic guitar in the mix by producer, Dwight Baker. The track, penned by Corder, Aaron Eshuis and Ryan Beaver, centers around their life traveling across the world on tour, tipping their hats to Dublin, New Orleans and Colorado in the first verse. Feeling a bit check-listy in nature, “Gone” ultimately feels like a personal conversation with Cordero as he reflects on the highs and lows that come with life on the road as a touring band. “Like you ain’t ever seen Far and wide and between Chasing after dreams Right or wrong It’s a heavy price to pay I’ll make light of it some day With a tale to tell for each one I’ve been gone” This sentiment is shared by Cordero himself. Reflecting on “Gone,” he’d highlight that he was drawn to release the track as a celebration of their last show of their tour this year at Red Rocks, as they transition from life on the road to life in the studio soon. He’d also touch on the personal nature of the song, noting he could feel his soul in the recording itself. “Since our last show of the tour is at Red Rocks, it felt right to utilize the moment by tipping our hats to where all we’ve been, and to tee up what’s to come next — I could just imagine singing that line ‘Chased them clouds in Colorado’ and all the folks cheering along. We recorded a batch of songs earlier this year, and ‘Gone’ was the first because it was closest to my heart as we transitioned from being gone for a month to being straight into the studio. I feel like a piece of you gets woven into the mix, and when I listen to the recording of that song, I feel the soul of a man that’s been away for the last 10 years.” Ultimately, “Gone” is the band in their absolute sweet spot. Soft, warm production coupled with Cordero’s inviting vocals and conversational lyrics is exactly what you want from a Flatland song. While some groups focus on reinventing themselves from release to release, Flatland found their sound, stuck with it and keep perfecting it upon every new project.
