Deaf Dog Trained To Understand Sign Language Commands Is One Smart Pup!
Faith is a deaf dog living in Minnesota. Although her world is silent, her owners have trained the deaf dog using American Sign Language (ASL). This way, they can convey instructions, information, or praise to her. Most people know that dogs are smart enough to learn verbal language. When dealing with a deaf dog, Faith’s owners needed to find a different way, so they opted for sign language.
Faith knows several basic signs, such as “eat,” “sister,” and “sit.” If the dog is upstairs, her owner will flash the lights to get her attention and “call” her downstairs. Figuring out ways to communicate effectively with a deaf dog is a continuing task.
The family is no stranger to deaf dogs. They had a dog named Zoe who slowly lost her hearing. Zoe passed in 2022 at 15. Her companion, PeeWee, passed a year later, leaving only Faith. We don’t know if Zoe and PeeWee knew sign language, but Faith is a stellar student.
The deaf dog learns quickly and remembers the sign language commands. In the above video, Faith obeys the command to sit. Continuing to convey instructions, the deaf dog’s mom uses sign language for “treat,” “sister,” and “go.” This tells Faith that her human sister has a treat, and the dog can get the treat by going to her sister.
Deaf dogs frequently hit the spotlight. Cole is a deaf therapy dog that works in an elementary school. Dory is another deaf dog that knows sign language. Sometimes she gets confused and thinks the referees are signing to her during sports events.
Please share if you know a super smart deaf dog.
