Country Fans Accuse Chris Young Of Being Drunk On Stage At Boots In The Park As Rough Performance Of “I’m Comin’ Over” Goes Viral
Pretty rough.
Fresh off the release of his tenth studio album, I Didn’t Come Here To Leave, this past Friday, Chris Young took the stage at Boots In The Park this Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. After the likes of Dustin Lynch, Tucker Wetmore, Avery Anna and more warmed up the crowd, Young took the stage as the headliner. And fans were less than impressed.
As we know, the Tennessee native was once a staple of the genre in the 2000s, capturing massive, traditional hits with the likes of “Tomorrow,” “Voices,” “Gettin’ You Home” and “The Man I Want to Be.” Once the mid 2010s came along, Young found himself leaning more towards the pop-influenced sound that was taking over the genre with tracks such as “I’m Comin’ Over,” “Lonely Eyes” and the Cassadee Pope duet, “Think of You.”
If there’s one thing that’s been apparent throughout his career, it’s the simple fact that Young possesses one of the best pure voices in the entire genre, highlighted most prominently by his iconic cover of Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” at the Opry back in 2011 as well as the aforementioned “Tomorrow.” At Boots In The Park this weekend, however, Young’s voice was a bit off, leading fans to believe that he was drunk during his performance.
A video of Young performing his 2015 #1 hit, “I’m Comin’ Over” was uploaded by TikTok user, @SCDOWDY, with the caption:
“When you pay over a hundred dollars to see Chris Young and he’s drunkedy drunk drunk. WOW.”
The performance itself is pretty rough overall, with the “You” singer not only sounding pretty pitchy throughout but also rushing and dragging the track’s melody at times.
Of course, due to the TikTok user’s caption alleging that he was drunk during the performance, many in the comments were quick to jump to the conclusion that he was under the influence, with others saying he’s sounded similarly at past concerts.
“Well this is very disappointing. I love him. He’s my favorite country singer. What a bummer.”
“His concert that I went to was one of my favorites. This is sad.”
“Unacceptable”
“Disappointed.”
“Omg he sounds horrible”
“It’s like watching someone drunk singing karaoke”
“Unacceptable”
“Saw him a couple years ago, he was drunk there too… Will not pay to see him again.”
“He must have a drinking problem, he’s going fast, them slow, up and down in volume. He’s definitely drunk.”
Others, on the other hand, were defending Young in the comments, with many noting the fact that Young could have been experiencing issues with the sound system, a real possibility given the fact that it’s clear that he was having trouble staying in time with the song.
“It seems like audio issues maybe?? I’ve seen him and he’s great.”
“It kinda sounds like he can’t hear himself maybe?”
“I think it’s his ears that he hears himself back on. His PA man probably stinks.”
“I’ve seen him in concert and never had this problem. It may be the sound system.”
So was Chris Young drunk on stage at Boots In The Park? I’d have to say no.
Besides the fact that he showed no visible signs of being drunk on stage, I think it’s safe to chalk this up as an unfortunate bad performance that happened to go viral. Even ignoring the fact that Young is coming off a week filled with promotion for his new album, complete with an album release show, all signs to the 40-year-old singer/songwriter either having issues with his in-ear monitors giving him issues — or the even more reasonable possibility that he was simply tired from an incredibly busy week.
Bu you can come to your own conclusion and watch the performance here:

A number of comments on the Boots In The Park official Instagram post also voiced some displeasure, most accusing him of being drunk as well. Other claimed that a number of people left early.
As of right now, Chris has yet to address the performance, but if it really was a sound issue, you’d probably want to get out ahead of that and control the narrative… set the story straight.
