Video Of The Red Clays Strays Playing A Friend’s Wedding Back In 2022 Goes Viral

Imagine having the Red Clay Strays as your wedding band. It’s always fun to see videos of bands or artists playing a smaller gig before they blew up. Everyone has to start somewhere, and the band from Mobile, Alabama with hits such as “Wondering Why” and “Wanna Be Loved” were still a struggling band until they broke onto the scene in 2023. Bandmates Drew Nix (electric guitar, vocals, harmonica), Zach Rishel (electric guitar), Andrew Bishop (bass), John Hall (drums), Sevans Henderson (keys), and frontman Brandon Coleman have all been very open about the band’s early days, and how it was far from glamorous. They actually gave a lot of insight into that part of the band’s story during a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. Coleman explained how their hit song “Drowning” came to be, and that most of the band members were driving for Uber around 2020 just to make ends meet: “A lot of it came from us not feeling good. Drew and my brother Matthew are the main writers for the band. And, you know, our song ‘Drowning,’ Drew wrote that during COVID when we were driving for Uber, trying to keep the bills paid. My goal was to make 100 bucks a day for Uber. Driving for Uber in Mobile, Alabama sucks. I’d have to do like 12-14 hours a day to get that… and we were locally famous at the time, so I’d be picking up people and they’d be like ‘Oh my god, Red Clay Strays!’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, hop in.’” Isn’t that wild? Just five years ago, no one knew the Red Clay Strays outside of Mobile, Alabama. Now? They are one of the hottest new acts in all of music. Another thing that the Red Clay Strays offered up in their early days? They rented themselves out as a wedding band. And a video of them doing exactly that in 2022 is currently going viral online. Some lucky couple was able to be serenaded by Coleman and the Red Clay Strays just months before they went viral and became a household name. The video shows the band bringing the house down in a much smaller venue than what they are used to playing in 2025. They even finished off the night with a performance of “Stone’s Throw,” and the bridge and groom were absolutely loving it (as they should have been). A sibling of the groom captured the video, and just posted the video a couple of days ago, saying: “Back in 2022 when the Red Clay Strays played at my brother’s wedding.” @apistolnamedmatilda The red clay strays #hbyco #redclaystrays #theredclaystrays @The Red Clay Strays ♬ original sound – Miranda Yeah… being able to flex that the Red Clay Strays played your wedding might be the coolest brag of all time. Another caption that pops up later in the video says that Drew, the guitarist for the Red Clay Strays, is best friends with the groom, so that obviously played into the band playing the couple’s big night. Still though… they’d be a much harder wedding band to book in the current day. This couple got in at just the right time, and now they’ll always be able to say: “Oh, you like the Red Clay Strays? Well I had them play at my wedding.”The post Video Of The Red Clays Strays Playing A Friend’s Wedding Back In 2022 Goes Viral first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
