John Moreland Releases Stunning ‘OurVinyl Sessions’ EP Featuring “Break My Heart Sweetly” & More

One of the best in the business for a reason. In a time where songwriters are all the rage, it’s become increasingly hard to pinpoint who’s truly the best. While Zach Bryan has undoubtedly become the most popular in the mainstream, names such as Turnpike Troubadours’ Evan Felker, Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell and more have consistently topped many critics’ lists of premier writers. For my money, however, John Moreland, has not only remained one of the best but ultimately the most underrated of today’s crop of troubadours. Since his debut in 2011 with Earthbound Blues, the Oklahoma native has proven time and again that he can deliver some of the most introspective and ultimately soul-crushing collections of poetry in the entire genre. Best known for tracks such as “Break My Heart Sweetly,” “You Don’t Care for Me Enough to Cry” and “Hang Me in The Tulsa County Stars,” Moreland has the unique ability to pen tracks that simply stick with you and linger in the back of your mind long after a listen. Simply put, he has a way of touching on themes of abandonment and loneliness that very few can ever dream of. The introspective and heartbreaking nature of his discography simply cannot be ignored, and today, Moreland is back to remind everyone with the release of his brand new four-song OurVinyl Session EP. View this post on Instagram A post shared by OurVinyl (@ourvinyl) For those unfamiliar with OurVinyl, they’re a production company best known for capturing live performances of the best independent country artists working today. Collaborating with everyone from Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours and Flatland Cavalry to Charley Crockett, Colby Acuff and Billy Strings, they’ve captured some of the best reimaginings of the aforementioned artists’ songs to date. This time around with Moreland is no different. Featuring the aforementioned standout hit, “Break My Heart Sweetly,” as well as stellar tracks such as High on Tulsa Heat’s “Losing Sleep,” Big Bad Luv’s “Latchkey Kid” and In the Throes’ “God’s Medicine,” the OurVinyl session is Moreland in his sweet spot. < Undeniably his standout track outside of “You Don’t Care for Me Enough to Cry” commercially, “Break My Heart Sweetly” is captured brilliantly here. As a song centered around loving someone you know is going to leave you, Moreland’s heart-wrenching lyrics are brought to the forefront with the sparse, acoustic production as he sings: “There’s a scar on my soul So let me down easy Break my heart sweetly Like you always do I guess I can’t let go ‘Til you wreck me completely Break my heart sweetly Drape me in blue”  The same can be said with the remaining tracks on the EP as well. His late-night ponderings of lost love on “Losing Sleep Tonight,” further apathy on “God’s Medicine” and redemption found in “Latchkey Kid” all sound stellar with the stripped-back, acoustic production from OurVinyl. Ultimately, Moreland’s OurVinyl session highlights everything that makes him one of the most compelling artists in the genre today. His incredibly raw, raspy vocals are captured perfectly at the forefront of the acoustic production, letting each and every heartbreaking line strike you even harder while you listen. As previously mentioned, Moreland has the unique ability to burrow his way into your mind through his songwriting, and he does it once again here. If you’re a fan of the “Sallisaw Blue” singer, this is a must-listen. “Break My Heart Sweetly” “Losing Sleep Tonight” John Moreland Tour Dates November 9 – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Flyover Fest November 15 – Galveston, Texas – Old Quarter Songwriter Festival December 4-6 – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – The Blue DoorThe post John Moreland Releases Stunning ‘OurVinyl Sessions’ EP Featuring “Break My Heart Sweetly” & More first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
