WATCH: Rare Footage Of Chris Stapleton Performing “Nobody To Blame” With Vince Gill & Keith Urban Back In 2016
What a throwback.
Who could forget 2016? A year filled with everything from one of the most historic presidential elections in recent memory to killer clown sightings popping up across the country, it’s a time period many can hardly forget. From a country music perspective, it was quite a dark time with the likes of Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt, Thomas Rhett, Dan + Shay and more dominating the charts with pop and bro country hits such as “H.O.L.Y.,” “Break Up in a Small Town,” “Die A Happy Man” and “From The Ground Up.”
With that being said, however, there was one major sign during that time that country music was headed in the right direction. And that sign was none other than Chris Stapleton.
Not quite being at the god-like status he’s at now, in 2016, the “White Horse” singer was riding the highs of his historic end to 2015, which not only featured the release of his 7x platinum debut album, Traveller, but also his now-iconic breakout at the 49th ACM Awards that secured him his first three wins for Male Vocalist, New Artist and Album of the Year (Traveller).
Given the fact that Stapleton was already a household name in Nashville as a songwriter, scoring hits with Josh Turner’s “Your Man,” Darius Rucker’s “Comeback Song,” Luke Bryan’s “Drink A Beer” and plenty more, he was already well-regarded by many of the biggest stars in the genre before he became a certified superstar.
That was put on display to its fullest during this rare footage uploaded by TikTok user, @StapletonHQ, when Stapleton called upon the likes of Vince Gill and Keith Urban for an acoustic rendition of his 2x platinum single from Traveller, “Nobody To Blame,” at an iHeart Country event.
Urban and Gill, who are arguably two of the greatest guitarists in the genre’s history, lay down some killer, twangy riffs while Stapleton delivers his typical world-class vocals on the sultry track. Hilariously, the Kentucky native ended up forgetting the words to the fourth verse for a moment, saying, “I should know what I wrote,” before recovering and finishing the performance flawlessly
Ironically, the “Tennessee Whiskey” singer would later honor both Urban and Gill at various events and award shows in the future. First laying down a stellar cover of Gill’s “Whenever You Come Around” in 2022 during his CMT Giants special, he recently blew the crowd away at this year’s ACM Awards with a legendary cover of Urban’s 2016 #1 hit, “Blue Ain’t Your Color” back in May.
Arguably one of the most rare performances from Stapleton that have surfaced online, this is nothing short of a must-watch if you’re a fan of his.
