Goat Cam: Silly Footage Shows Lawn Reclamation From The Point Of View Of A Hungry Group Of Goats

Kudzu is a vine. It is commonly referred to as “the invasive vine that ate the South.” It spreads quickly through a series of runners that root in moist soil. Once it has a foothold, it can grow a foot per day, with mature vines reaching 100 feet. To reclaim a lawn from kudzu, people are finding hungry goats are the most effective tool.

The use of heavy pesticides also kills any other plant life. Continuous mowing for at least two growing seasons helps, but it is time-consuming and expensive. Goats are a relatively inexpensive lawn care system, and you can even rent them!
Owners of goats have discovered an untapped market in leasing their herds to people for lawn maintenance. Kudzu removal is a huge task, but the goats make short work of it. Companies like The G.O.A.T. Grazers provide the goats and transportation to and from your site. You provide the goat food.
This eco-friendly approach to weed control is efficient, quick, and cost-effective. It is great for people living in areas that might not have zoning for farm animals. They come in for a day or two, take care of overgrown kudzu, and then return to their farm.

Originating in Asia, kudzu’s first appearance in the US was in 1876, introducing it at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. It has sweet-smelling blooms and was initially an ornamental houseplant. The Soil Conservation Service promoted it as an excellent solution to soil erosion.
Throughout the South, they planted it in many areas. By the time they realized that kudzu suffocates all other plant life, the problem was too widespread. Traveling through the Smoky Mountains, entire hillsides are dying due to kudzu overgrowth.
