Jelly Roll Says That Cheating On His Wife Bunnie Xo Was “One Of The Worst Moments” Of His Adult Life
He’s come a long way – both personally and professionally.
Most people are at least familiar with Jelly Roll‘s story. The country star, whose real name is Jason DeFord, spent much of his early life in and out of the prison system while battling with mental health and addiction issues.
But it was finding out that he became a father – when a prison guard knocked on his jail cell – that convinced Jelly Roll to get his life together:
“I’m sitting in there, and that guard knocks on my door May 22nd, 2008… He goes ‘you had a kid today,’ and he walked away. I still get emotional.
It’s like a Damascus road experience in the Bible. I immediately…was like I’ve got to do something. I’ve got to quit this sh*t. I’ve got to figure it out.”
Well he decided to try to make a career in the music industry, which led to him playing gigs for a few hundred bucks while living out of his car. And that’s when he met his future wife, Bunnie Xo – who at the time was working as a high-end escort in Vegas.
The couple married in 2016, long before Jelly Roll became a household name, and she’s been by his side through his meteoric rise, not only serving as a mother to his now-16 year old daughter Bailee Ann but also building her own media empire with her Dumb Blonde podcast, all while trying to start her own family with Jelly Roll as she’s opened up about when discussing her fertility journey.
Of course it hasn’t been easy for the couple. As Bunnie has discussed in the past, the two separated not long after getting married when she discovered that Jelly Roll was having an affair with an ex of his:
“We got married in 2016. The affair was started with an ex in 2017, and then I think I found out about it early on in 2018.”
The couple obviously worked things out, and Bunnie has even said she’s grateful for the experience because it’s made them a stronger couple:
“It happened for a reason and I’m so thankful that it did because it just made us the best of friends,”
But Jelly Roll admits that was one of the darkest times of his adult life.
During an appearance this week on the Human School Podcast with Miles Adcox, Jelly Roll opened up on the affair, saying that it led him to question whether he would ever be able to clean up his act:
“I don’t talk about this publicly at all, but one of the worst moments of my adulthood was when I had an affair on my wife. Because it was the first time that I was like, ‘I really can’t get this right at all.’
Like, I know I’m in love with this woman. It was just such a – like it just really, really, really blew me back.”
And while he doesn’t agree that he’s thankful that the affair happened, he says that the process of repairing their relationship has been a special part of their story:
“And I did a lot of work to repair that relationship, you know what I mean? Like the repair has been special, man, and we’re stronger than we could have ever been.
I wish our story would have went in the way that it never had an affair, and I’m in no way glad it happened, but man I’m proud of who we are today… I truly am.”
Jelly Roll says that the affair happened while he was hanging with the wrong kind of friends, but that he’s since changed his mindset when it comes to the people he wants to surround himself with:
“I looked back at even that moment of my life and it was like, I was hanging around a bunch of people that were cheating on their wives… I used to be proud of longstanding friendships just because they had a number attached to them. Horrible humans, but I would just be proud to say a dude’s been with me 12 years…
I want to only be around people that I want to be like.”
That’s a good rule for all of us to live by.
