Variety reports that The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 is officially in development with Netflix set to distribute the Sony Pictures project.
The details of that arrangement are indeed a bit odd. Due to distribution issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony Pictures sold the distribution rights to 2021’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines to Netflix. Ultimately, Netflix decided to give the film a limited theatrical release before bringing the movie to its streaming service. While we can assume that the sequel will follow a similar distribution model, it’s worth noting that Netflix has been getting a bit more generous with their theatrical releases and may have learned a valuable lesson from the success of KPop Demon Hunters‘ limited theatrical releases. Given how popular The Mitchells vs. the Machines ended up being, it’s possible that this sequel could end up enjoying at least a slightly longer theatrical run. However, nothing has been confirmed at this time.
What we do know is that Guillermo Martinez (head of story for The Mitchells vs. the Machines) and JP Sans (co-director of The Bad Guys 2) have signed on to direct this sequel. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are also returning to produce. No word yet on original director Mike Rianda’s involvement, though it’s likely that he will return in some capacity given that he voiced multiple characters in the first movie.
That said, we really don’t know anything about the sequel’s plot, so it’s tough to say how much of the original cast will actually return. Even the sequel’s title is up in the air. It’s popularly being referred to as The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2, though the Mitchells seemingly scored a pretty decisive victory over the machines in the first movie. So either the machines return or the Mitchells will actually face off against a new threat this time around. We shall see.
There’s no word yet regarding the sequel’s release date, so you have plenty of time to watch the original if you haven’t already done so. It’s really, really good. Until then, check out the movie’s trailer for a taste of how much fun it is to watch a barely functioning family become unlikely heroes. [end-mark]
