Passerby Captures Wild Video Of Manatee Popping Out Of The Water For A Quick Snack
Manatees might just be the pranksters of the sea. These happy floating potatoes enjoy swiping cameras from divers to take selfies. They have been misidentified as mermaids, possibly due to their interactions with humans and touching scenes like this.
Manatees typically do not come out of the water to feed, as in this video. Some people may express concern about the availability of underwater grasses to feed the manatee in the area. While that is possible, it is also possible that the grass along the marshy shore is somehow more tasty. People should never feed wild manatees, as this can lead them to view humans as food providers.

The large animal is a favorite sight along the coasts of Florida. Snorkelers enjoy swimming amidst an aggregation (group) of friendly critters. Several laws protect manatees, so divers and snorkelers need to study up a bit before interacting with these lovable animals.
State and federal laws protect manatees, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is very helpful in explaining the protections for manatees. They have guidelines on viewing manatees, including what people should and shouldn’t do.
The biggest rule to follow is not to touch the animals. If you are swimming and they touch you, it is fine, but do not be the first to initiate contact. Manatees are curious and very docile by nature. A good way to remember this rule is by repeating what people tell children in a store: “Look with your eyes, not with your hands.”
