Zach Top Jumps Straight Into The Holiday Season With “Blue Christmas”

Moving right past spooky season. I am not one to skip through the season to rush to a particular holiday, but some folks are, and that’s okay. I have a friend who listens to Christmas music year-round because it lifts her spirits, and while it’s not my cup of tea to be hearing about snow falling when I’m battling the 100-degree weather of Texas summers, it works for some folks. We have not even hit Halloween, and many folks are already thinking about the Christmas season, whether they are preparing for their family Christmas card photos or planning their Christmas trees so they can go up the day after Thanksgiving (or before). And nothing puts you in the Christmas spirit long before Christmas than some classic tunes. It appears that Zach Top is already in a holly jolly mood because he’s dropping Christmas tunes. Last year, Top gifted fans with two holiday tunes, an original ditty penned by Top and his producer Carson Chamberlain called “For You For Christmas” and a cover of the Dolly Parton classic, “For You For Christmas.” This year, Top is back with another Christmas tune to spread holiday cheer, and it’s none other than the longstanding staple “Blue Christmas.” The song was penned by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson in 1948. Elvis Presley most famously recorded the tune about an unrequited love; however, it was first recorded by Doye O’Dell in the same year it was written. Over the years, many country stars have performed or recorded their own versions of the tune, including the neo-traditionalist Zach Top. Earlier this summer, a video of Zach Top in the studio with Brent Mason and others at Franklin’s Castle Studios surfaced. All the men are sitting behind the mixing board listening to a version of “Blue Christmas” sung by the Washington native. @jimvancleve1 I am certain this man could sing the phone book and it’d be an instant classic. Speaking of classics, this obviously was already one, but it sure needed a little fiddle and steel, and a little bit of @Zach Top! Such a blessing and an honor to play some fiddle in the studio for this, with all my favorite cats! #brentmason #garyprimm #scottysanders #jimmycarterbass #markbeckett #carsonchamberlain #coryhalterman #mattrovey @Elvis Official @BRENT MASON #zachtop #country #countrymusic #fiddle #steelguitar #studiomusic ♬ original sound – jimvancleve1 In the comments, the creator noted that this video was actually taken in 2024, right before Top released “Blue Christmas” as an Apple Music exclusive, so some fans might already be familiar with the twangs Top laid down in this song. But for the rest of us non-Apple users, today is like Christmas day as Top dropped it as a new single. “Gosh dang it ain’t even Halloween yet and I’m already putting Christmas songs out. ‘Blue Christmas’ is out everywhere now.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zach Top (@zachtop) Zach Top’s rendition of the tune receives a chef’s kiss. The classic country sound of the melody they composed aligns with the established sound of the “Sounds Like the Radio” singer. The traditional country sound highlights stellar fiddle solos and steel guitar moans, bringing the lyrics of a broken heart to life. “I’ll have a blue Christmas without you I’ll be so blue just thinking about you Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree Won’t be the same dear, if you’re not here with me” While I don’t love listening to Christmas music outside of Christmas time, Zach Top’s “Blue Christmas” is an exception.
