Dolly Parton Stuns Fans With High-Speed Performance Of “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind” – “Pretend We Have A 45 Record On 78 Speed”

A woman of many talents. The day of country music talk shows needs to come back. Back in the day, we had so many great TV programs featuring the famous faces of country music like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Mac Davis. The shows featured many different bits, including performances with friends, skits, and interviews; these variety shows really did have it all. Dolly Parton‘s show, in particular, created some viral moments that have stood the test of time and remain relevant decades after it first aired. One of my favorites from the ’80s was when Dolly Parton wrote a song called “He’s Got A Headlock On My Heart.” For the skit, she was appropriately a fan girl of the ever-popular WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan (rest in peace). Parton revisited the skit in one of her episodes, and it’s peak ’80s gold. The big hair, the theatrically closing from the ’80s, and the old wrestling ring… It’s all perfection. “Every day I get calls about showing this video…most of them are from Hulk. But what the heck, I want to see it again, too. So I hope you folks enjoy it again! ‘He’s Got A Headlock On My Heart,’ the story of Starlight Starbright!” You never knew what you were going to get when tuning into Dolly! But before her variety show in the ’80s, Dolly Parton had another show in the ’70s, also called Dolly, that also led to some viral moments. One that has been living rent-free in my head recently comes from a taping in 1977, where Parton flawlessly sings “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind” at a sped-up rate. Dolly introduces the idea to the audience, saying: “Let’s pretend like we have the record on a 45 record, and we put it on the record player, and we flip it up on 78 speed. Want to try a little bit of that? Let me see if I can get my picking finger working. We’ve been wound up all day, I don’t see why we can’t.”  For those of you who might not be familiar with what Parton is referencing, the record speeds 33, 45, and 78 refer to the number of total rotations the vinyl makes per minute. Typically, those numbers are followed by RPM, which stands for rotations per minute. If you’re the owner of a record player, it’s super fun to switch between speeds and hear the tunes at a slower or faster tempo. Following? Okay, back to this clip… Parton then begins picking her guitar rapidly and delivering the lyrics at twice the original pace, which sounds about twice as fast as the original recording. It’s giving Alvin in the Chipmunks but in a more impressive sense. It’s not only impressive that Parton knows precisely how to speed up the tune, but it also sounds like second nature to the Tennessee native. Parton and her backup singers do not miss a beat, and it truly sounds like you are just listening to a sped-up version of the song. The studio audience was also impressed with their performance, laughing as they listened intently. Of course, they are not laughing at Parton but rather the quick nature of the ballad. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m beyond impressed with Dolly’s ability to chuckle as she performs. Check it out: I mean, what can’t Dolly do? This clip shows the incredible musicality that Dolly Parton has possessed since the start of her career. Not every musician can pick that up without blinking twice.
