“Guardian Angel” Saves 85-Year-Old From Major Scam

As much as we want to believe it could never happen to us, the truth is millions of people fall victim to scams every year. Sadly, the elderly are a prime target because they aren’t always adept with technology, and people take advantage of them. When 85-year-old Fran Bates received what she believed was a legitimate call from her bank about a compromised account, she trusted the caller and did as they said. The person told her to deposit $23,000 in cash into a Bitcoin machine to keep it safe. She went to a Texas gas station, where a very observant customer jumped in to help. The Bitcoin Scam Nearly Took Fran Bates’ Money Fran Bates told ABC News it was a horrible experience, and even though the bitcoin scam seemed unreal, she felt pressured in the moment. “And you think if you had to listen to it, you would wonder, ‘What’s going on with that woman? Doesn’t she realize what they’re doing to her?’ No, you don’t,” she said. Myndi Jordan was at the same gas station the day Fran was feeding $100 bills into the machine. She called the police, just in time. “I hate when somebody tries to take advantage of somebody that’s not able to protect themselves, or defend themselves,” Myndi told ABC News. “And I feel like they were taking advantage of you. And I was like, ‘No, we’re not doing this today.'” As a victim of identity theft herself, she knew immediately that something about the situation seemed off. Police body cam footage captured by Lieutenant James Stewart of the White Settlement Police Department shows Fran putting money into the machine as a man on the phone tells her to click “I’m done.” “No, don’t click ‘I’m done,'” the officer told Fran on the body cam recording. “Do not click anything.” Thankfully, Myndi acted quickly, and the pair saved Fran from potential financial ruin. She called the pair her “guardian angel” and “knight in shining armor.” Angels among us are real, and they helped save Fran Bates from a bitcoin scam. She’s one lucky lady.
