Trump’s Sudden Crusade for Nigeria’s Christians
Are we going to bomb Nigeria now? President Trump warned Nigeria that if Christians continue to be killed, the U.S. will “immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria” and “may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
He says that he directed the Secretary of War to prepare for an attack and Secretary Hegseth confirmed that “the Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
The Nigerian government rejected this threat.
Are Christians actually at risk in Nigeria? They are. The scale of violence against Christians there has been widely documented.
Christians are also under threat elsewhere. This summer, ISIL claimed responsibility for a horrific church attack in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Why, then, the sudden singular focus on Nigeria? Why isn’t the same energy being applied to places like Congo? Could it be due to Nigeria’s cozy economic relationship with China?
As for ending aid, yes! Let’s do that.
