Viral Video Shows Old Man Suffering From Alzheimer’s Disease Still Remembering All The Words To Marty Robbins’ “El Paso”
The heartbreak of disease juxtaposed with the power of music.
If you personally know someone that’s been affected by Alzheimer’s or another progressive brain disorder, then you’re familiar with the daily battles that the disease can bring. Families have no choice but to watch their loved ones struggle with memory loss and confusion as they grow older. Currently, there’s no cure for the disease that affects 7 million Americans (according to Alzheimer’s Association).
One of those many millions of people that suffer from the disease is the focus of this video that’s going viral on TikTok. Lori Robinson has been sharing her journey with her father’s fight against Alzheimer’s for months, and this latest TikTok shows how the man’s musical memory has yet to be taken away by the disease.
Robinson’s father can be seen in the passenger seat of a vehicle, singing along to Marty Robbins’ hit song “El Paso.” You might not recognize the name, but once it starts playing, you’ll know that you’ve heard it before. The old man knows and sings along to almost every word of the 1959 tune… which both encourages and breaks the heart of his daughter:
“My precious dad. Alzheimer’s disease is crazy. He can remember every word to a song, but not what I told him a minute ago. I think he could have been a singer or actor or both.”
@lori.robinson Why a cruel disease!! He can sing every word to a song but cannot remember 5 minutes ago. It breaks my heart! I love him so much!! #dad #dadsoftiktok #daddysgirl #daddy #alzheimers ♬ original sound – Lori Robinson | T2D
Such a touching video.
Robinson’s father has quite the singing voice, and many on social media jumped into the comments section to point that out. The video that the TikToker shared also inspired people online to share their own, similar stories… and offer words of support for Lori Robison:
“When I was taking care of my husband’s grandfather, I would play Conway Twitty for him and it was like he was right back in his day.”
“Music stored in a region of brain that makes recall easier. My mom could sing all the songs in ‘My Fair Lady.’ But forgot where she lived.”
“He sounds beautiful. I’m sorry for the loss you suffer everyday with this horrible disease.”
“Music is the best thing! He’s got a beautiful voice!”
“My Dad passed 2 years ago and he LOVED this song. He had dementia and was so different at the end but still my sweet father. I miss him with all my soul. I’m sorry you are hurting.”
Alzheimer’s truly is a terrible disease.
It’s nice to see that social media can still be a nice, heartwarming, supportive place. Everyone loved seeing Robinson’s dad sing along to the song, and their rooting for him in his fight against the incurable illness. And as always, it’s great to see how music has the power to break through even the most degenerative of diseases.
I mean… if any classic country song was good enough to stand up against Alzheimer’s, it’s this one:
