Formerly Conjoined Twins Defy The Odds With Incredible Athletic Ability
Silvia Hernandez welcomed triplet daughters in 2015. Catalina Torres was a singleton, while Scarlett Torres and Ximena Torres were born conjoined at the pelvis. The girls underwent a very long and complicated separation surgery at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 2016, ABC News reported. Doctors successfully completed the operation, but remained cautiously optimistic. They warned Silvia that Scarlett and Ximena may never walk. But Silvia was undeterred and confident that her girls would lead a totally normal life. Nearly a decade later, Silvia and Scarlett are not only walking but also competitive cheerleaders.
You Would Never Know The Girls Were Born Conjoined Twins
Scarlett and Ximena walk, run, and dance separately today. It’s hard to imagine they were born conjoined twins.
“Thanks to the doctors, they’re here… walking and dancing,” their mother, Silvia Hernandez Ambriz, told KIII.
Today, Silvia and her daughters share a passion for dance and cheerleading. They recently competed in a state-level cheer competition, and their mother served as their coach.
Michelle Horine, the girls’ godmother, told KIII she’s been in the twins’ corner since the moment Silvia gave birth.
“I was blessed to be one of the few people that was able to go into the NICU and visit them when they were still conjoined,” Michelle, who now serves as CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities South Texas, told the news outlet. “I was blessed to be with their mother during the surgery. They shut the whole waiting room down and only allowed a few people in the room. They’ll always be a part of our family.”
Silvia said she’ll never forget the moments with Scarlett and Ximena following their separation. She believes her daughters are here for a purpose and to inspire others.
“It’s like they were born again,” Silvia said of the conjoined twins’ separation. “An example for other kids with medical conditions — if they want something, to not give up.”
