The first proper trailer for Fallout season 2 just dropped, and the extended preview certainly offers our best look yet at the upcoming season while also raising a few fascinating (perhaps currently unanswerable) questions about its major players, locations, and events.
As you may remember, the first season of Fallout ended with Lucy and Cooper (aka The Ghoul) pursuing Lucy’s father Hank following the reveal of his various betrayals. Elsewhere, the denizens of Vault 33 (which include Lucy’s brother Norm) are navigating the fallout (tee-hee) of a shocking series of events that upended their once seemingly-peaceful home, while Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus finds that he has become a somewhat unintended war hero. It’s a lot, but the biggest thing to remember is that the season ends with Hank approaching the border of the New Vegas wastelands.
And while this season 2 trailer offers glimpses of what’s next for our beloved band of misfits, the preview may mean the most to fans of the beloved 2010 video game Fallout: New Vegas. The trailer is filled with references to that game, including glimpses of its various factions, more footage of the show’s version of the game’s big bad, Mr. House, and a few locations, bots, and side characters sure to make us Fallout fans squeal with glee (as we are wont to do).
While we’ve seen (or at least heard of) some of that before, this preview does feature a few new details. Notably, it offers our first look at the much-hyped new characters played by Macaulay Culkin and Kumail Nanjiani. We don’t learn much about either in the preview, though it appears both will play a role in the New Vegas faction war that is seemingly playing out around the main characters’ ongoing adventure. Notably, we also get our first proper look at the series’ Deathclaws, which is surprising given that the reveal of the fan favorite (relatively speaking) creature of death, destruction, and fear feels like the kind of thing another show would withhold from the preview material. Nevertheless, there it is near the end of the trailer in its brief, horrible glory.
It’s not all revelations and resolutions, though. This trailer teases a few things that likely won’t be addressed until the season debuts (or, more likely, when it ends). For instance, is that Ron Perlman’s voice we hear roughly midway through? Perlman is the long-time narrator of the Fallout games, and it was reported that he’ll actually appear in the second season. Could he be playing a Super Mutant? Is Kumail Nanjiani playing Arthur Maxson? How will this show address the timeline ambiguities created by New Vegas‘ multiple endings? These are all questions… questions that need answering!
Again, don’t expect any answers to those questions at the moment, though do feel free to wildly and irresponsibly speculate about them ahead of Fallout season 2’s Prime Video premiere on December 17. [end-mark]
