Zach Top is a smart man. Not only is he up for an impressive five trophies at the 59th annual CMA Awards tonight, he’s acknowledging just how hard the ladies in country music have worked to be the most-nominated artists of the evening. Top is primed for a big night as he’s nominated for Male Vocalist, New Artist, Single and Song (“I Never Lie”) and Album of the Year (Cold Beer & Country Music). But it’s Lainey Wilson, Ella Langley and Megan Moroney that are leading the way with six nominations across the 12 major categories, so you can expect the ladies to have a huge night, and deservedly so. All three of them have had breakout years over the last several years, and are all superstars in their own right that have surpassed even the country fandom to become hits in the music world in general, which is NOT easy to do by any stretch of the imagination, for anyone, regardless of gender. So to watch all of them get to this point in their careers has been so fun to watch, and I try not to pull this card to often, but… I was listening to them and writing about them way before it was cool (sorry, I had to), which makes it all the more exciting to see what they’ve done since they first got started a relatively short time ago. And when asked about his thought on the ladies dominating the CMA Awards this year and leading the nominations, Zach joked that “they should be” because “they’re smarter than us,” which was a perfect response, in my humble opinion. He added that all of them have been killing it, from Lainey to Kelsea Ballerini, and so it’s obviously very deserved: ‘Yeah, as they should be. They’re smarter than us. They’re killing it, for sure. I’m good friends with Lainey. I love Lainey. I’ve gotten to know Ella a little bit, you know, both of them had great years, been on top of the world the last little bit it seems like. Kelsea’s been killing it for, it feels like forever now.
