Major MAGA Figure to Resign From Congress
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., announced Friday night that she will be resigning her seat in Congress come Jan. 5, 2026.
Greene announced the shocking news in a statement on X. “I’ve always represented the common American man and woman as a member of the House of Representatives, which is why I’ve always been despised in Washington, D.C.” Greene said, expressing extreme displeasure with how things are going within the Republican party.
“Almost one year into our majority, the legislature has been mostly sidelined. We endured an eight week shutdown, wrongly resulting in the House not working for the entire time. And we are entering campaign season, which means all courage leaves and only safe campaign re-election mode is turned on in the House of Representatives.”

Greene also took aim at President Donald Trump for promoting a primary challenge against her: “Republicans will likely lose the midterms and, in turn, be expected to defend the president against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me.”
“It’s all so absurd and completely unserious, I refuse to be a battered wife, hoping it all goes away and gets better,” Greene added.
The Georgia congresswoman’s resignation marks the crescendo of an intensifying fight between her and Trump, which was looking like a primary battle in Georgia’s 14th district heading into the 2026 midterms.
Greene and Trump have offered different explanations for the source of their disagreement.
When Trump announced he was withdrawing his support for Greene via Truth Social, the president called her a “ranting Lunatic” and claimed “it seemed to all begin when I sent her a Poll stating that she should not run for Senator, or Governor.”
“All I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” Trump added.
While Greene had been putting pressure on Republicans to take more legislative action—particularly on Trump campaign agenda items and Trump executive orders—and questioning Republican foreign policy, Greene believes Trump withdrew his support over her efforts to release the Epstein files.
“President Trump just attacked me and lied about me,” Greene posted on X Nov. 14. “He’s coming after me hard to make an example to scare all the other Republicans before next weeks [sic] vote to release the Epstein files.”
President Trump just attacked me and lied about me. I haven’t called him at all, but I did send these text messages today. Apparently this is what sent him over the edge. “It’s astonishing really how hard he’s fighting to stop the Epstein files from coming out that he actually goes to this level,” Greene continued. “But really most Americans wish he would fight this hard to help the forgotten men and women of America who are fed up with foreign wars and foreign causes, are going broke trying to feed their families, and are losing hope of ever achieving the American dream.”
“I have supported President Trump with too much of my precious time, too much of my own money, and fought harder for him even when almost all other Republicans turned their back and denounced him,” Greene added. “But I don’t worship or serve Donald Trump.”
Trump shot back on Truth Social: “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Green is a disgrace to our GREAT REPUBLICAN PARTY!”
Prior to the blow up, Greene signed on to a discharge petition for the Epstein Files Transparency Act. This procedural mechanism forced a vote on the House floor that directs the FBI and DOJ to release the unclassified Epstein documents. When the bill came to the floor, it succeeded 427-1.
Shortly thereafter, the Senate approved of the measure by unanimous consent and the president, who called the Epstein files a “hoax” and opposed the discharge petition for weeks only to change his position just prior to the House vote, signed the measure.
Greene made a name for herself in 2020 by getting elected on an intensely pro-Trump platform despite her lack of political experience. Over the course of her tenure in Washington, Greene has repeatedly expressed frustrations with how Republicans in Congress have managed the issues that got them elected, such as affordability, transgenderism, and immigration. At one point, she was considered one of the president’s closest allies in the lower chamber.
Upon Greene’s resignation, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is tasked with issuing a writ of election within 10 days. A special election to serve out the rest of the term will be scheduled at least 30 days after the writ is issued.
