Throwback To Randy Travis Rising Up Through The Stage For Electric Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Halftime Show In 1998
One of the greatest halftime shows of all time?
Happy Thanksgiving week to everyone out there. If you want to get into the spirit of what’s my personal favorite holiday (nothing better than food and football) a little early, look no further than this throwback performance from none other than Randy Travis. It was in 1998 when the country music legend played The Salvation Army’s Annual Red Kettle Kickoff Halftime Show during a Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving game.
“America’s Team” always does a great job of shining a light on the work of the Salvation Army, and the annual halftime show is a great reminder of all the great work that the charitable organization does. And historically, the halftime concert is usually put on by huge, superstar country music artists.
Last year, Lainey Wilson was the headlining act of the Red Kettle Kickoff Halftime show. Then in 2023, who could forget the show that Dolly Parton put on that had everyone’s Thanksgiving gathering buzzing. Luke Combs had the honor the year before that, and if you trace the show’s history all the way back to 1998, there are a whole lot more country artists that put on phenomenal Thanksgiving halftime shows.
But Randy Travis’ might be the most memorable of them all. The artist’s social media account even recently took the chance to ask if everyone still remembers the great interlude that Travis entertained the Texas crowd and those watching at home with. The real question is… how could you ever forget it?
“Do you remember when Randy was featured in the Dallas Cowboys half time show on Thanksgiving?”

That’s just a short clip of the performance (a teaser, if you will).
Travis’ actual, full performance included his hit songs “The Hole,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” and “I Did My Part.” And don’t even get me started on that rising up from underneath the stage that kicks off the performance. I don’t think the term “aura farming” existed back in the ’90s, but just because there wasn’t a term for it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t happening.
The end of the performance also includes a very moving moment where a children’s choir kicks in, and Dallas Cowboys players and others place change into the iconic, red Salvation Army bucket. Randy’s “I Did My Part” could not have been more fitting for the moment, and all of it put together made for an incredible, meaningful Thanksgiving performance.

Post Malone is going to have a hard time topping that.
In case you haven’t heard, the “I Had Some Help” singer is set to headline this year’s Salvation Army’s Annual Red Kettle Kickoff Halftime Show as the Dallas Cowboys plays against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. Since he’s “gone country” in recent years, the country music artists headliner streak for the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving halftime show continues:
Post says he’s honored to be able to perform at the game:
“I’m from Texas. I grew up a Cowboys fan and have been watching this halftime show for years. It’s a real honor to be part of the Red Kettle Kickoff with The Salvation Army and the Dallas Cowboys and help bring hope to so many people.”
Hope he watches Randy Travis’ performance for some inspiration. The post Throwback To Randy Travis Rising Up Through The Stage For Electric Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Halftime Show In 1998 first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
