Several AFL clubs are embroiled in suspect contra sponsorship deals with a security company accused of persistent worker exploitation and central to a scandal involving a bikie gang, an allegedly corrupt foreign president and federal Labor’s controversial Nauru deportation policy.
Confidential company files from booming security firm MA Services outline its strategy of encouraging AFL clubs across Australia to give the firm cleaning and security contracts in return for sponsorship, in what industry sources described as irregular and a potential corruption risk.
Concerns about MA Services’ conduct has also led to divisions inside AFL headquarters as the company bids on a multimillion-dollar tender from the AFL-owned Marvel Stadium, five sources with knowledge of the confidential process said.
MA Services’ bid involves a sponsorship contribution of up to $1 million, the sources said, but the league’s integrity division had raised internal concerns with the AFL’s procurement arm about the company’s suitability.
