The Trump administration now wants you to report biased news articles. It has launched the “Media Bias Offender Tipline,” a government-run site asking citizens to turn in “any media outlet misrepresenting the Trump Administration, and skewing the truth” so the White House can “review it.” Review it? For what purpose? In the United States, it is our First Amendment right to represent or misrepresent anything we want — including the government. That’s the entire point of a free press. The marketplace of ideas only works when the government is not compiling lists of journalists and outlets it believes have said the “wrong” thing. This framing — “misrepresentation” — feels like a cousin of “misinformation,” another category Washington has used to justify deplatforming, blacklisting, and surveilling dissent. Now the executive branch is openly crowdsourcing a list of media “offenders.” If you’re thinking that this feels like Big Brother, you’re in good company.
