Nashville Congressional Candidate Who Said She “Hates Country Music” Delivers Bizarre Karaoke Performance Of Dolly Parton’s “9 To 5” After Losing Election
Does she realize she doesn’t have to pretend anymore?
In case you somehow missed it (lucky you), Nashville had a congressional election this week to fill the seat of Republican Mark Green, who left the House of Representatives earlier this year to take a job in the private sector.
The race to represent Nashville in Congress came down to GOP candidate Matt Van Epps, a veteran and member of the Tennessee National Guard who previously served as the state’s commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, and Behn, a former community organizer and current representative for Nashville in the Tennessee House of Representatives.
Despite Nashville being a fairly blue city, the district as a whole is considered reliably red, with President Trump winning by 22 points last November. So it was always going to be an uphill battle for Behn, but things got even harder for her when comments resurfaced about the city of Nashville that she had made back in 2020.
In the comments from an appearance on the Year Old GRITS podcast on 2020, Behn claimed she “hates” Nashville and country music:
“I hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music, I hate all of the things that make Nashville. I hate it.”
Aftyn Behn– the Democrat nominee for the upcoming TN07 special election– says that she despises Nashville, the city that she's running to represent in Congress:

It didn’t help that it wasn’t the first time Behn had shown her disdain for the people she wants to represent in Congress. Back in 2019, she wrote an op-ed calling Tennessee a “racist state” and claiming that “racism is in the air we breathe.”
Sounds like a fun person to be around.
Well after her comments on Music City went viral, Behn took to social media to defend herself and claim that she doesn’t REALLY hate Nashville or country music – citing as evidence the fact that she’s cried in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
“Today, the Republicans decided that they’re going to start this narrative that me, the state representative who represents downtown Nashville, doesn’t like the city.”
Yeah, I don’t know where Republicans would get that narrative just from hearing you say “I hate Nashville.” (Direct quote). Gotta be fake news. But anyway, Behn continues:
“Sure, I get mad at the bachelorettes sometimes. I get mad at the pedal taverns, right? You’re talking to somebody who has cried no less than 10 times in the Country Music Hall of Fame. The girl that just goes to the Ryman to hang out. No, no, we’re not even gonna go there.”
Behn went on to call the accusations that she hates Nashville “rumors,” despite the fact that she quite literally said “I hate Nashville.” But anyway, don’t believe your ears when you hear her say she hates Nashville – I mean, she HAS cried at the Hall of Fame.
NO, I DO NOT HATE THE CITY I REPRESENT
The national GOP's new attack? That I “hate Nashville." I’ve cried in the Country Music Hall of Fame no less than 10 times. They’re panicking because we’re close to winning. Eyes on the prize, y’all. Let’s go. pic.twitter.com/jjwMnyW8ZU

As if that wasn’t enough to prove her country music credentials, during an appearance on the Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar podcast, Behn was once again asked about the comments where she had even more evidence to prove that she doesn’t really hate country music:
“I’m gonna say something I haven’t said, and I think it’s funny, I hope my parents don’t kill me. I do not hate country music, I was conceived after a George Strait concert.”
Democrat Aftyn Behn bizarrely tries to walk back her comments saying she "hates" Nashville and country music.

The whole thing was just bizarre. Are these really the best people we can find to represent us?
Well anyway, the special election was held this past Tuesday, and despite polls showing Van Epps up by just two points, the Republican ended up winning comfortably and defeating Behn by nearly 9 points to become the next Congressman for the 7th District of Tennessee.
But apparently, Behn still wasn’t done trying to shake her comments about hating country music.
During her afterparty, Behn showed up to deliver her concession speech wearing a rhinestone-studded shirt and delivered a bizarre karaoke performance of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.”
No, really.
@charlesalexandermusicWhat an astounding night. What a fabulous candidate. And Nah. @aftynbehn doesn’t hate country music. She can also sang.♬ 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton
What a disaster. Thank God we don’t have to deal with two years of that in Washington DC. We have enough people in Congress who are only there to try to get clips for TikTok.The post Nashville Congressional Candidate Who Said She “Hates Country Music” Delivers Bizarre Karaoke Performance Of Dolly Parton’s “9 To 5” After Losing Election first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
