Dick Van Dyke Shares Hilarious Story About Late Brother Jerry Van Dyke
The legendary Dick Van Dyke isn’t the only comedian in the family. His brother, the late Jerry Van Dyke also made millions laugh. He’s probably best known for his role as Luther Van Dam, the lovable assistant coach on the 1990s sitcom Coach, starring Craig T. Nelson. Jerry died in 2018 from congestive heart failure at age 86. Seven years later, his brother misses him tremendously. According to People, Dick opened up about his brother during a recent Vandy High Tea at his Malibu home.
“The thing about Jerry, I could do comedy. You hand me a comedy, and I could do it. Jerry was funny inside. He couldn’t help it. I could do comedy. He was comedy,” Dick said.

Jerry Van Dyke Always Made His Big Brother Laugh
Dick Van Dyke said the moment Jerry Van Dyke entered the world, he was funny.
“Jerry was funny from the day he was born, he broke me up,” Dick said. “I tried so hard to get him a series, but they wouldn’t go for it.”
Dick shared a family story about growing up and how Jerry could crack him up no matter what they were doing.
“Jerry said something funny and I started to laugh, but our faces were frozen stiff. We couldn’t have any expression, so we started laughing,” Dick said. “It was the worst. God, we had tears running down our cheeks. I’ll never forget it. It’s the hardest I ever laughed in my life. He could make me laugh.”
The Van Dyke brothers worked together on several projects during their careers, including The Dick Van Dyke Show and Temperatures Rising. Their last appearance was in a 2015 episode of The Middle when they played siblings. At the time, the pair joked in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
“We are becoming closer,” Jerry told the outlet. “I’m really getting to know him better at this age.”
“It’s because we have been working together more,” Dick added.
“The nicer he is to me, the more I think he thinks I’m going to die,” Jerry said in a mic drop joke.
