Kevin’s “Home Alone” Room Service Bill in Today’s Economy Will Make You Weep for the 1990s
In the early 1990s, we all secretly wished our parents would get on the wrong plane and leave us at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Kevin McCallister had it made. Not only did his family ditch him, and he got to harass two bad guys in his family’s picture-perfect home, but two years later, he was racking up the most elite room service we’ve ever seen. The Home Alone franchise is peak Christmas. But if you watch it with your kids today, they don’t understand how it could happen. That’s because in 2025, it really couldn’t. We are tracking our children’s every move and getting alerts for every penny we spend on our phones. But way back when, we weren’t that connected. But let’s pretend for just a moment that we were, can you imagine what Kevin’s little trip to NYC would be today?

The “Home Alone” Adventure Would be Staggering
Pubity shared a breakdown of Kevin’s expenses from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and we promise, you’re not ready. In 1992, Kevin’s room cost $1,100. Today, that’s equal to $6,244. His room service bill in 1992 totaled $967. Today, the feast costs a whopping $2,223. How about that ice cream? In the early 1990s, it would put you back about $18. Today, you’re looking at $24. Comparatively speaking, that’s a deal. Now, let’s get to the grand total. If you wanted to live like Kevin McCallister at the Plaza Hotel in Home Alone 2 today, be ready to spend—$ 8,511. Peter McAllister screamed about $2,109. Imagine the yell you’d hear today?
The amount shocked people, but remember, it’s just a movie.
“Luckily, his dad has that huge house and has money to send everyone on nice vacations!” someone wrote.
And we give it to this guy for the best comment of them all.
“Keep the change ya filthy animal !!!!”
