Lainey Wilson & Shane Smith Team Up For Killer Performance Of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” In Las Vegas

Well, looks like we need a Christmas album ASAP. In an absolutely stacked Red Dirt scene, Shane Smith & the Saints are simultaneously one of the best and most underrated bands in the entire subgenre. Riding the highs of the success of their fourth studio album, Norther, last year, 2025 has proven to be yet another successful year for Shane Smith & the Saints. As one of the most exciting bands coming out of the ultra-talented Texas scene, Smith and Co. have been quite busy lately despite not releasing much music throughout the year. Notably, they made appearances at the likes of Two Step Inn, Koe Wetzel’s “Stronger Together” Texas benefit concert, Turnpike Troubadour’s Wild America Tour, all while headlining sold-out shows of their own. After putting the finishing touches on the year, complete with a three-night string of their annual “Ugly Christmas Sweater Party” shows in Houston, Austin and Durant, Oklahoma, the Austin band teamed up with none other than reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year, Lainey Wilson, for her sold-out show at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last weekend. After Smith and Co. got the party started with some key tracks in their discography such as “All I See Is You,” “Adeline” and “The Greys In Between,” Wilson would perform a collection of her smash hits, including “4X4XU,” “Watermelon Moonshine,” “Heart Like a Truck” and her most recent #1 single, “Somewhere Over Laredo.” The biggest surpirse of the night, undoubtedly, was when Smith returned to the stage during Wilson’s set to perform a stunning, acoustic rendition of the timeless Christmas classic, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” which first debuted all the way back in 1944 in the Judy Garland-led musical, Meet Me In St. Louis. Though Wilson has been no stranger to Christmas music in the past, just recently releasing a five-song EP including a holiday version of her 2024 track, “Peace, Love, and Cowboys,” a cover of George Strait’s “Christmas Cookies” and a “duet” with the late Bing Cosby on “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” Smith and Co., obviously, have never ventured into holiday music yet in their career. And after hearing Smith absolutely crush the vocals on the holiday classic, I think the world would be a better place if they went ahead and, at minimum, recorded a studio version of the track. There’s no denying that the Austin native has one of the most dynamic voices in the genre, complete with a rasp akin to late Johnny Cash and the range of fellow alt. country star, Charles Welsey Godwin, and it’s displayed beautifully here. Smith’s warm baritone on the first verse coupled with Wilson’s always sharp vocals on the second verse simply sound like a match made in Heaven on “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” If you’re a fan of Smith (and Wilson), you won’t want to miss this live performance.
