The Red Clay Strays’ Drew Nix & Andy Bishop Show Off Their Hockey Skills With The Las Vegas Golden Knights
Letting it rip on the stage and now on the ice.
With the year dying down, the Red Clay Strays are done touring for the year, closing out the year with some time in Vegas during the NFR. The atmosphere in Las Vegas during the NFR is unlike any other time in Sin City, with rodeo and country music fans flooding the streets, making for stellar crowds at their shows.
The Red Clay Strays were also soaking up the special time in Vegas, taking time out of one of their shows to surprise their good friend Brent Cobb with an RIAA Gold plaque for “Black Creek.” Frontman Brandon Coleman spoke to the crowd, and Cobb, while someone backstage brought out the framed gold record:
“Don’t go anywhere, Brent. We’ve got a present for ya. Brent, you have a song named ‘Black Creek.’ You may not know this, but ‘Black Creek’ recently went gold. We want to bring this out for you and present it to ya. Look at that buddy… You deserve it.”
But the boys also found time to have some fun offstage while in Vegas.
One day, Drew Nix and Andy Bishop made their way over to the Las Vegas Knights practice facility to see how they faired on a pair of blades.
“Drew Nix and Andy Bishop from the Red Clay Strays test out their hockey skills in the Mobile Cup Challenge”
The NHL shared clips and action shots from their time on the ice on their social media. Hosted by comedian Steve Byrne, he led the two Alabama natives through a series of exercises testing out their hockey skills. But before the competition fully kicked off, Drew and Andy took a minute to disclose why they think they’d bring home the Mobile Cup Challenge trophy.
“Me and Drew are probably the best skaters out of Mobile…which isn’t saying much, so I don’t know. We didn’t grow up with any kind of ice, so I don’t know. Drew’s kind of like a baby giraffe when he’s one ice, so I might have that advantage.”
Drew didn’t have much confidence in himself, saying:
“I’m definitely going to fall, for sure. I get better every time I skate, so we will see.”
After a little more trash talk, in which Andy Bishop said his youth could give him a competitive edge, the challenge unfolded. Andy and Drew’s first task is to weave a puck between cones down the ice, then take a shot. Andy came out of the gate hot, flawlessly gliding the puck between the cones before shooting it into the goal… and then promptly ate it on the ice.
The second challenge was a straight-up race, a test of skate speed. Andy Bishop again took the crown for this, but Drew Nix put up one helluva fight. While it seemed like Andy Bishop was going to take home the win, during the final test, Drew Nix came back with flying colors. The boys competed in a shootout against a guest goalie, Golden Knights broadcaster Daren Millard. The men were both putting up a tough fight to take home the Mobile Cup Challenge win, but Drew had better luck with his angle and made one final shot that earned him an additional three points, sending him into the lead.
While I doubt the Red Clay Strays are looking to change careers, given the hot streak they’ve been on, their effort out on the ice wasn’t half bad for a couple of Bama boys.
