Instead of Passing Down His Name, Cody Johnson Named His Son After Their Family Ranch: “My Wife Wanted A ‘Jr.'”
Leaving him the legacy of the ranch.
The Johnson family grew this fall, adding a baby boy to the family. Earlier this year, on the red carpet at the ACM Awards, Cody Johnson and his wife, Brandi, revealed they were expecting. Brandi exposed her slight baby bump, sending fans into a frenzy, congratulating the couple.

Cody and Brandi are already parents to two little girls, Clara May and Cori, and while the “C’mon Cowgirl” singer is an incredible girl dad, he was over the moon to be getting a son.
“My girls… You can’t beat my girls. I love my two girls with all my heart. They’re 10 and 8, Clara and Cori, and I think I’m excited to watch them help raise this little boy.”
He shared with People. Ahead of his son’s arrival, Johnson shared how excited he was to raise his “little buckaroo” on their family ranch and that he would leave him the legacy of the land.
“I didn’t get to live the cowboy life for a long time. I had to kind of earn my way to the point where I could afford to say, ‘We’re gonna go buy a ranch, and we’re doing this.’ So the fact that he’s gonna be born on, you know, into a cattle ranch, that’s gonna be cool, man.
He’s gonna be the little, I promise you, the little buckaroo riding around with six shooters on.”
Cody Johnson is keeping his promise to his son that he will be a little buckaroo, so much so that he’s honoring his family’s legacy by naming his son after their Texas ranch. During an interview last month with Q106 Madison, the CMA Award-winning singer said his lovely bride wanted to pass down his name to their son, but Cody protested.
He did not want his son to have a name so heavily rooted in music to protect him from pursuing a path not meant for him. Instead, the couple opted to honor the legacy they’ve built as a family by naming their child after their ranch (but with a twist).
“I mean, he’s just got so much more opportunity. Like, we’ve got way too many horses at this point, and having horses and cows and stuff like that was something I dreamed about when I was little. I always wanted to live on a cattle ranch. Well, now he gets to do that. You know?
And my wife wanted a ‘Jr.,’ you know, Cody Jr. And I’m like, ‘No, I want him to be his own man. His own person. What if he never wants anything to do with music?’ And so we named him after our ranch. Our ranch is the J Bar C Ranch, and the first time we sponsored a volleyball tournament, and they were like, ‘Thanks to the J C Ranch.” So we just named him Jaycee.
You know it’s named after the ranch, and it’s spelled like Kaycee, Wyoming.”
Johnson previously shared that he and Brandi planned to name their child, regardless of whether it was a boy or a girl. But I have to admit, Jaycee Daniel Johnson has a good ring to it… who knows, maybe he will take after his father and pursue music after all, but if not, he’s got a great fallback plan: taking care of the horses and cattle on the ranch.
