More than 130,000 PG&E customers in San Francisco lost power on Saturday, ABC7 San Francisco reports. According to the outlet, the first reported outages occurred at roughly 9:40 a.m. More outages happened shortly after. PG&E said crews were evaluating the problem as of 2 p.m. and estimated most customers’ power would be back on by 3:45 p.m., with others estimated to be restored by. 7:15 p.m., according to PG&E’s outage map. PG&E tells ABC7 News, the cause is being investigated. But the San Francisco Fire Department told ABC7 there was a fire at the PG&E substation at 8th and Mission which was reported at 2:14 p.m. They said it could be a contributing major factor to the massive outage. San Francisco city officials are asking the public to not call 911 to report power outages, “unless there is a life safety emergency. Keep 911 phone open for emergencies.” “BART said trains would not run through the Powell Street, Civic Center and Van Ness stations due to the power outage,” KTVU stated. “We are working with first responders and city officials on an outage in San Francisco affecting approximately 130,000 customers. We will share more information as it becomes available,” PG&E wrote on social media. PG&E workers evacuated the substation and shut off power to the building, allowing SFFD firefighters to douse the flames. Elias said crews managed to get the fire under control with no injuries or displacement, but were working to ventilate the building after smoke accumulated inside. This story is developing.
