Republican Governor To Deploy 350 National Guard Troops

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry announced on Tuesday that he would deploy 350 National Guard troops to New Orleans. “These citizen soldiers will help ensure safety during the busiest season in the city. We owe them all a debt of gratitude for their commitment to our State and Nation,” Landry said. “I also want to thank President @realDonaldTrump and @SecWar Hegseth for putting Americans and their safety first,” he added. “We know how to make cities safe, and the National Guard complements cities that are having high crime problems,” Landry said during an appearance on Fox News. “Look at what the president’s done in Washington, D.C. When he wanted to send the National Guard into Washington, D.C., Louisiana was one of the first to raise his hand and say, our troops will go there and help you. And the city is so much better,” he continued. Check it out: BREAKING: Today I am announcing 350 National Guard troops will be deployed to New Orleans. Louisiana National Guard officials said service members will begin to provide help to law enforcement in New Orleans shortly after Christmas. The guard will assist with security in the New Orleans French Quarter for New Year’s Eve, the Sugar Bowl, and during Mardi Gras events. New Orleans witnessed a mass casualty attack this past New Year’s Day, which resulted in 15 deaths, including the perpetrator, and 57 others sustaining injuries. With the return of the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl and the arrest of a New Iberia man whom the FBI said was planning a New Orleans attack, authorities have asked federal approval on an increased security rating, Fox 8 reports. Still, local leaders have been quick to note that violent crime rates remain significantly down. New Orleans' murder rate, for example, is on track this year to be at its lowest since the 1970s. In a shift from similar deployments elsewhere, Landry proactively requested that National Guard troops be used in Louisiana to back up local enforcement.
