The ‘Chad Powers’ Show Tracklist Is PACKED With Great Country Music
Okay, I know I’m a little late here… but it needs to be said.
Over the Christmas holiday, I’ve been looking for news shows to watch that I can really sink my teeth into, so to speak, because it took me all of two evenings to watch the newest season of Emily In Paris.
So after wasting entirely too much time scrolling through pretty much every streaming service known to man, I finally decided to give Chad Powers a try, which is a show on Hulu that’s based on the “Chad Powers” sketch from Eli Manning a few years ago, when the former New York Giants quarterback went undercover to try out for the Penn State football team.
The comedy series stars Glen Powell as main character Chad Powers, also known as Russ Holliday, a former star college quarterback who goes undercover as the eccentric Powers, who is a walk-on recruit with a fake mullet and prosthetics. He’s in disguise to try and get a second chance at football with a struggling South Georgia Catfish.
He navigates life and football while trying to stay undercover, which obviously presents some interesting situations with his teammates and coaches, leading to some hilarious moments. I didn’t expect to like it half as much as I did, but if you’re a football fan in any way, I think you can really appreciate the series and will probably get a kick out of it. It has the quirkiness of a show like Righteous Gemstones, and is another series full of Southern humor which is both outlandish yet scary accurate… I can’t get enough.
It’s only six episodes, which is really unfortunate because that was definitely not enough. Because not only was the acting great, you’ll recognize several famous faces aside from Powell, but the soundtrack is superb.
I had no idea how heavily country music is featured in the show, but there’s at least one country song in every episode, and they’re all fantastic. From Willie Nelson to Joe Diffie, and even Johnny Blue Skies, it’s a stacked tracklist and that in and of itself made the show even more fun to watch as someone who loves both football and country music.
Even though it’s a short series, I dare say the list of songs from just six episodes rivals that of a Taylor Sheridan production, and I only wish it was a longer show just to see what other music they would have included.
Chad Powers premiered back at the end of September, and it was produced by ESPN and Omaha Productions, which is the production company owned by brothers Eli and Peyton Manning.
Here’s a look at all of the great country songs featured on the show, which was composed by Natalie Holt:
Johnny Cash – “Ring Of Fire”
Joe Diffie – “Pickup Man”
Willie Nelson & Dyan Cannon – “Bridge Over Troubled Water”
Charley Crockett – ‘”Good At Losing”
Nitty Gritty dirt Band – “Fishin’ In The Dark”
Willie Nelson – “The Party’s Over”
Johnny Blue Skies – “Who I Am”
It’s hard to find shows like this, which are fun, quirky, and relevant, which also features both classic and current country music that isn’t pop radio trash, and they did a great job selecting this music that I’m kick myself for not watch it sooner.
You can watch the trailer below… I promise, it’s good:
