It’s official: the Trump administration just ended temporary protected status (TPS) for the country of Somalia. In effect, this means that thousands of Somalis living in the United States must leave by the deadline of March 17th or face full deportation proceedings. The choice is yours. pic.twitter.com/40ihQRhzax — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (@ICEgov) January 13, 2026 DHS Secretary Kristi Noem spoke to Fox News about the move: “Temporary means temporary,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News Digital in a statement. “Country conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that it no longer meets the law’s requirement for Temporary Protected Status.” “Further, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests,” Noem added. “We are putting Americans first.” Sources at USCIS told Fox News Digital that there are 2,471 Somali nationals currently in the U.S. under TPS, with 1,383 in the country with pending TPS applications. The move comes as DHS continues ICE operations in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a widespread roughly $9 billion fraud scheme involving members of the Somali community plagued the state. Fox News Digital learned that an estimated 600 Somali nationals who are protected by TPS live in Minnesota. Originally, Somalia was granted TPS in the 90s due to civil war in the country. In 2024, Biden extended the protected status. CBS News noted: TPS dates back to 1990, when Congress created the policy to offer a temporary safe haven to foreigners from countries facing an armed conflict, environmental disaster or another emergency that makes their return unsafe. The second Trump administration has sought to end most TPS programs, which were dramatically expanded under former President Joe Biden. Mr. Trump’s administration has moved to revoke the legal status of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Myanmar, South Sudan, Syria and Venezuela.
