The J.J. Carrell Show EP58: Do We Have A Constitution?
The U.S. Constitution has been amended 27 times since 1788. The first 10, ratified in 1791 as the Bill of Rights, guarantee freedoms like speech, religion, press, and protections against unreasonable searches and cruel punishment. Key later amendments abolished slavery (13th, 1865), granted citizenship and equal protection (14th, 1868), extended voting rights to Black men (15th, 1870), women (19th, 1920), and 18-year-olds (26th, 1971), enabled the federal income tax (16th, 1913), required direct election of senators (17th, 1913), repealed Prohibition (21st, 1933), and limited presidential terms (22nd, 1951). The most recent, the 27th (ratified 1992), delays congressional pay raises until after the next election. DISCLOSURE: This post contains affiliate links.
