Jelly Roll Refuses To Take The Bait When Asked To Comment On Politics At The GRAMMYs: “People Shouldn’t Care To Hear My Opinion”

While most at the 68th Annual GRAMMY Awards last night were quick to condemn ICE or give their political opinions, Jelly Roll refused to take the bait when a reporter tried to get him to comment last night. The “Son Of a Sinner” singer walked away with three GRAMMYs, one for Best Country Duo/Group Performance with his song “Amen” alongside Shaboozey, one for Best Contemporary Country Album for Beautifully Broken, and one for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for “Hard Fought Hallelujah” with Brandon Lake. While speaking to the press backstage, a reporter from Rolling Stone attempted to get Jelly Roll to join his fellow artists in speaking out against ICE: “Would you be willing to comment on what’s going on in our country right now?” Of course what she was really asking was “would you be willing to bash the Trump administration and criticize ICE for us?” But Jelly Roll (whose real name is Jason DeFord) refused to take the bait during a moment that was supposed to be about one of the biggest accomplishments of his life: “I don’t really – so this is the truth, and I’m glad somebody asked because I love talking about this stuff when people care about my opinion, but I can tell you that people shouldn’t care to hear my opinion, man. You know, I’m a dumb redneck. I haven’t watched enough. I didn’t have a phone for 18 months. I’ve had one for four months and don’t have social media. I hate to be the artist that’s that aloof, but I just, I’ve come so disconnected from what’s happening. And I’m just not a – I grew up in a house of like insane pandemonium. And like, like I didn’t even know politics were f—king real until I was in my mid twenties in jail. Like that’s how disconnected, when you grow up in a drug addict household, you think we like have common calls about what’s happening in world politics? Like we’re just trying to find a way to survive, man, you know?” But he did hint that he plans on speaking out on the topic very soon, and making his voice heard loud and clear: “I have a lot to say about it and I’m going to in the next week and everybody’s going to hear exactly what I have to say about it in the most loud and clear way I’ve ever spoken in my life. So I look forward to it. Thank you for bringing it up.” While Jelly declined to get in the mud with all the others, his duet partner Shaboozey dedicated his award to immigrants after winning, taking a not-so-subtle shot at President Donald Trump and his immigration policy, as well as the ongoing ICE raids: “The last thing I want to say, immigrants built this country, literally. Actually. So this is for them, for all children of immigrants. This is also for those who came to this country in search of better opportunity to be a part of a nation that promised freedom for all and equal opportunity to everyone willing to work for it. Thank you for bringing your culture, your music, your stories, and your traditions here. You give America color. I love y’all so much. Thank you.” BREAKING: County singer Shaboozey dedicated his Grammy award to immigrants during his acceptance speech: Shaboozey: “Immigrants built this country, literally. Actually. We saw clearly during the last election that people are done with being lectured by celebrities on how to vote or how they should think, yet for some reason last night was just an endless parade of virtue signaling and lecturing from some of the most out of touch people in the country. Good for Jelly for not getting involved. The post Jelly Roll Refuses To Take The Bait When Asked To Comment On Politics At The GRAMMYs: “People Shouldn’t Care To Hear My Opinion” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
