If You Live in These 11 States, You May See the Northern Lights Tonight

The Northern Lights should be making another appearance in these 11 northern states tonight (Feb. 4), and they may stretch even further into the country later this week. According to forecasts, people living in Alaska, and the northern parts of Idaho, Washington, Montana, Minnesota, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine may see the aurora borealis dance across the sky tonight, thanks to a massive solar storm that hit our sun earlier this week. The storm, which hit the sunspot AR4366 on February 1, sent X-class solar flares towards Earth. X-class is the most intense class of flares, and they “can produce as much energy as a billion hydrogen bombs,” according to NASA. They can also cause major communication blackouts. Fortunately, the fares didn’t create any disturbances for us. Instead, they set the stage for the Northern Lights. If you’re lucky enough to live in the viewing area, head outside between 10 pm and 2 pm, and be sure to drive away from the city lights. If you don’t live in the 11 states above, you may still get a chance to see the Northern Lights this weekend. Another strong flare erupted from the sun today, which may send the lights even further south. You can find this story’s featured image here.
