Ella Langley Rallies Fans For A Rare Billboard Feat Only A Few Female Country Artists Have Ever Achieved
In the running to become part of the very, very small club of women in country music to score a #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which encompasses all musical genres. Her single “Choosin’ Texas” has done incredibly well both with streaming and country radio, and she’s on pace to make history this weekend with it too.
Of course, “Choosin’ Texas” is the lead single from Ella’s forthcoming sophomore album Dandelion, which is slated for release on April 10th. Ella produced the album alongside Miranda Lambert and Ben West, and it’s easily one of the most highly-anticipated albums announced this year.
Ella wrote “Choosin’ Texas” with Miranda as well as Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor, and Miranda is also featured on background vocals, and her touch and style is apparent throughout the entire song, which is probably why it’s one of my favorites Ella has ever released. Soaked in steel and full of heartbreak, it finds Ella reminiscing on a lost love who fell in love with a Texas girl, leaving her heartbroken in Tennessee.
And considering she’s currently sitting just behind Harry Styles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his song “Aperture,” she’s also neck and neck with the 2026 Grammy-winning Best New artist Olivia Dean with her song “Man I Need” as they battle for #1.
Ella has taken to Instagram to ask fans for help in getting to the top, as she shared several stories on Instagram explaining the historical significance of it.
She shared:
“Y’all have put me in a position to do something only a few females in country music history have ever done.”
She continued, saying the final numbers will come down to iTunes activity:
“I’m being told we’re neck and neck on getting the #1 and if we have on last push on iTunes we might make country music history!”
And she noted just how significant it would be for a female country artist to achieve this:
“Less than 10 women in country music have gotten a #1 on Billboard.”
Lastly, Ella shared a photo with her friend, and now producer, Miranda Lambert saying she feels good about her chances:
“I know we can do it.”
In terms of other female country artists who have done it, Ella is right in that it is a very short, and legendary, list.
Jeannie C. Riley did it with Harper Valley PTA” in 1968, Dolly Parton did it with “9 to 5” in 1981, Carrie Underwood did it with “Inside Your Heaven” in 2005 (and she is the only country artist to debut at #1 on the Hot 100) Taylor Swift did it with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” in 2012 ( she was still classified as a country artist at this time), Kacey Musgraves did it as a featured artist with Zach Bryan on “I Remember Everything” in 2023, and most recently, Beyoncé did it with “Texas Hold ‘Em” in 2024, which (I guess) was classified as a country song even though that whole Cowboy Carter album was quite controversial, and with that, she became the first Black woman to top both the Hot 100 and the Hot Country Songs chart.
That’s just six in total, and two of them aren’t even country artists… so Ella would be in rare company, indeed.
In terms of why she mentioned iTunes, the sales there actually do factor into the Billboard Hot 100 as part of the “digital sales” component, along with other platforms like Amazon and Bandcamp. Streaming and radio airplay carry more weight in the calculation, digital sales are still a significant factor, as a single song sale on a platform like iTunes often holds much higher weight than a single stream.
So, that would be the most efficient way for her to get ahead at this point as the week draw to a close, and I know her fans are very passionate and I have no doubt will do everything they can to help her reach such an incredible achievement.
And if she does pull it off, she will become just the third female artist to have a #1 on both the Hot Country songs chart and Billboard Hot 100, as the only other two who have done it are the aforementioned Taylor Swift with a 2021 re-recording of a 2012 song “All Too Well [Taylor’s Version]”, following “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” in 2012. Beyoncé also did it with “Texas Hold ‘Em” in 2024.
Ella previously scored #1s at country radio with “Don’t Mind If I Do” and “You Look Like You Love Me,” both of which are duets with Riley Green. Should this song at least hit #1 at country radio this weekend, and it likely will, it will be her first solo #1 there too.
Everything is coming up Ella lately, and it really has been incredible to watch her rise to superstardom as she continues to cement herself as one of the premiere artists in mainstream country music with a ton of crossover appeal, and she certainly makes country music look good.
She closed out her stories with this:
“Let’s do it for women and let’s do it for country music”:
Amen to that…
“Choosin’ Texas”
