Watch Jamey Johnson Perform An Emotional Tribute To George Jones During All-Star ’90s Country Concert

God bless ’90s country. It’s hard to believe that we’re already 26 years removed from the ’90s, but fortunately us the country music of the decade is still as popular as ever. The ’90s country sound has had a resurgence in recent years, driven no doubt by nostalgia as well as a desire for more traditional sounding country as the genre moves further and further towards pop, rap and rock. Last night, the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama played host to a ’90s country fan’s dream concert, featuring over 40 artists from the ’90s playing their hits in an all-star salute to the greatest decade of country music. An All-Star Salute To ’90s Country: Honky Tonk Time Machine kicked off with Aaron Tippin performing “There Ain’t Nothing Wrong With the Radio,” and from there it was a nonstop 4 hour show featuring artists performing songs love and some you may have even forgotten about. The show featured artists like Lee Roy Parnell performing “What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am?,” Kentucky Headhunters with “Dumas Walker,” Lorrie Morgan performing “Except for Monday,” Ken Mellons doing “Jukebox Junkie,” Bryan White performing “Sittin’ On Go,” the Frontmen performing hits from Little Texas, Lonestar and Restless Heart, Rick Trevino making a rare appearance to perform “Bobbie Ann Mason,” Rhett Akins breaking out his hit “That Ain’t My Truck,” and many, many more. One of the standouts from the night, though, came from an artist who didn’t debut until the 2000s. Jamey Johnson made an appearance at the show in his home state, not to perform his own hits, but to honor another country legend: The Possum, George Jones. Johnson was called on to perform “Choices,” Jones’ single from 1999 released on his Cold Hard Truth album. The song was originally written and recorded by Billy Yates in 1997, but Jones made it his own and released his version of the song two years later. It would go on to become his last solo top 40 hit, and win the Possum a GRAMMY award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. “Choices” was also at the center of one of the most memorable and iconic performances in the history of the CMA Awards, when Jones was asked to perform an abridged version of the song and instead decided not to perform at all. Alan Jackson, who was also performing that night, wasn’t happy at the disrespect he felt the CMAs were showing George Jones by asking him to shorten his performance, so he decided to abruptly cut short his own performance of “Pop a Top” and launch into a chorus of Jones’ song in protest. It was the perfect song to bring out last night to honor the country music legend, who was still cranking out heat in the ’90s, and Jamey Johnson was the perfect artist to ask to join the all-star lineup to pay tribute to the late, great George Jones.
