Restaurant Gives Dying Man an Incredible Gift with His Final Meal
After a long and difficult battle with diabetes, pancreatitis, amputations, and finally kidney failure, Al Wilsey knew his life would soon end. The Gilbert, Arizona, man opted to stop dialysis and spent his final days saying goodbye to those he loved and enjoying every moment he could. One of Al’s favorite restaurants, Nando’s Mexican Café, was at the top of that list. When he called to place his final order for the following day, the family-owned business could sense something in Al’s voice. They knew they had to do something special.
Nando’s Employees Wanted to Help Al Wilsey
Ava Littau answered Al Wilsey’s call that fateful night. When she asked whether he planned to pick up the food, Al told her he was dying.
“I was like, ‘That’s not a joke. Something in his voice, just maybe something spoke to me. And I was like, ‘He’s not joking. These are his final few days, and it’s up to us to make sure we do something about it, just to give him a smile or something, anything you know,” Ava told News 12.
Although the restaurant doesn’t deliver, Nando’s general manager, Kayla Bracamonte, made an exception. Along with Al Wilsey’s order, the restaurant added a sweet note.
“Mr. Wilsey, we thank you for your loyalty throughout your years. We are saddened to hear about your situation. We wish you the best; you will be in our prayers. Dinner is on us. Love, Nando’s family,” it read.
In addition, the restaurant paid for the family’s meal. The gesture overwhelmed Al’s wife, Roberta.
“I was blown away. I started crying, thinking he’s not even going to be able to eat this food,” she said.
Al loved every bite. And in an incredible twist of fate, that meal was his last. He passed away a short time later.
“It was such a good reminder that there are good people in this world. And I…just couldn’t believe it,” Roberta said.
Nando’s Mexican Café is a gift to its community. They should be so proud of their employees.
