“Vinyl, CD & Cassette Only”: Sturgill Simpson Officially Announces New Johnny Blue Skies Album, ‘Mutiny After Midnight’
HOLD YER HORSES.
After what felt like months of teasers, speculation and a widespread false report that he was working with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, yesterday, Sturgill Simpson (Johnny Blue Skies for the ill-informed) turned heads and set up fans for an incoming announcement on his Instagram story, where a meme was posted of a mind-blown man with crazy eyes with the caption:
“Just heard new JBS & DC’s album.”
Moments later, the “Long White Line” singer would give fans what they’ve been begging for for months: an official album announcement. In a lengthy letter, Simpson would reveal that the album is titled Mutiny After Midnight.

The “Swamp of Sadness” singer would call the upcoming album “a mutiny and open rebellion,” and that it’s supposed to act as a protest. With that being said, it might not be the type of protest people expect. JBS went into detail about the time he’s spent around the French, and the admiration he has for how they spark change… which is mostly through “threatening injustice with a good time.”
That’s why the new project will focus on dance as protest:
“There’s a simple goal we as a band set out to achieve: to make a dance record. So this protest, this mutiny is really more about the primary dance. The dance of all creation. To be clear, it is a protest against oppression and suppression, and the only tried and tested true antidote to that is pure, unfiltered, unapologetic, relentless disco-hedonism.”
Before JBS landed the plane that was this letter, he admitted that “everything won’t be for everyone,” but stated that this project by he and his band is just doing what they do best: being pirates. Drummer and backing vocalist Miles Miller, lead guitarist Laur Joamets, bassist Kevin, Black, and keyboard, saxophone player Robbie Crowell and, of course, Johnny Blue Skies are officially setting sail.
In case the simple announcement wasn’t enough, Simpson would confirm today that Mutiny After Midnight is coming just ONE MONTH from today on Friday, March 13th. On Instagram, he’d also share the killer, 70s-inspired cover art for the new project, which features a dagger piercing through a disco ball.

Simpson would dive further into the creation of the album noting that he envisioned the album with his dear friend and vice president of A&R at Atlantic Records, Ian Cripps, the “I Don’t Mind Singer” would explain that Mutiny After Midnight is ultimately a reflection on the current state of the world and some of his personal struggles.
“This is a new and very different Atlantic Records than my last go-around. Mostly, I’m very excited and honored to be working with my dear friend Ian Cripps, and to finally bring to fruition a vision we initially shared together over ten years ago. I wrote words to what is happening in the world and my life in real time, and played with a group of musicians I deeply love and respect. Together, we made an album that is very fun and will hopefully offer some relief from darkness in the world.”
Ultimately, Mutiny After Midnight will be produced by Simpson himself and contain nine songs, including “Make America Fuk Again,” which was teased at his Red Rocks Show last September. If you’re wondering just how you’ll be able to listen to the album, for now, Simpson is only releasing it on physical media such as vinyl, CD and cassette. In other words, you have to get your hands on a physical copy in order to listen to this dance-protest project.
