Lainey Wilson & Vince Gill Team Up For New Cajun-Inspired Duet, “Down At The Borderline”

That’s country… and I would never expect anything less from these two. Today, Vince Gill released his EP Down At The Borderline, which is the fourth installment in Vince Gill’s 50 Years From Home EP series. You’ll see a simple white guitar on the album artwork is a 1953 Fender Telecaster that Gill bought for $450 in 1978 from Del City Music in his native Oklahoma, and it’s been Gill’s main guitar ever since. He says it’s been with him through the entirety of his legendary music career, and so he wanted to pay homage to that important piece of his career with the cover: “It’s real special. I’ve got several other old Fender Telecasters, but that one just suits my hands, suits my ears. Everything about it is kind of a huge part of my entire catalog of playing guitar over all these years.” But in many ways, Gill says this music is a bit of a departure from some of his earlier EPs, saying it has “a little more zip” on it: There’s a little more zip on this EP. Some more guitar playing. Some of the earlier EPs have been singer-songwriter songs, not a ton of whittling around on the guitar. These songs are fun to stretch out a little bit on and just play some guitar.” The tracklist sits at seven songs in total, and he enlisted one of country music’s biggest stars in Lainey Wilson to sing on the title track. It was co-written with Liz Rose about a joint in Thibodaux, Louisiana where “they play the Zydeco and wrestle alligators,” with a sawdust floor and a shuffleboard table, as well as a matron, Mable, who keeps “a loaded pistol in her beehive hair.” It’s got tons of Cajun flair, making Lainey, a Baskin, Louisiana native, the perfect person to join him, and Gill knew right away he wanted her to be part of it: “Once I set it in Thibodaux I asked Lainey to come sing on it. She graciously said yes, and she killed it! I didn’t know if she’d be up for that; it’s hard to get somebody when they’re knocking it out of the park like she is, but she did, and I love the sound of our voices together.” Lainey added that it’s a “dream come true” to sing a song with Vince, explaining that they’ve become friends over the years and it means the world to her to be featured on this song: “Releasing a song with Vince Gill is truly a dream come true. I’ve had the chance to get to know him over the past few years and share the stage together, so being able to finally make music together means the world to me.” As you can imagine, the production is pure country, and they sound great together.
