George Strait Honors The Late, Keith Gattis, With “I Got A Car” As They’re Both Inducted Into Texas Songwriters Hall Of Fame
The King honoring his late friend, Keith Gattis, on a very special night. Yesterday, George Strait was honored alongside his fellow Texans Miranda Lambert, Don Cook and Keith Gattis as they were all inducted into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Of course, they’re all in great company as they join icons in Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings Kris Kristofferson, Clint Black, Ronnie Dunn, Townes Van Zandt, Buck Owens, Buddy Holly and more as prior inductees.
Strait isn’t necessarily known as the most prolific songwriter out of that group, though he has the most #1s for any artist in any genre (60), the most #1 albums (27) and over 113.5 million units sold in the U.S. (fourth among country artists), and he has consistently been criticized for his lack of songwriting credits. Though he has written a few dozen songs throughout his career, none of his iconic hits have been written by him.
But there’s no denying how much he means to music in general, and especially his home state of Texas, and while he was an honoree himself, Strait also helped pay tribute to the late Keith Gattis, who passed away in April of 2023.
It’s hard to understate the scope of Gattis’ songwriting throughout his career, as he has songs cut on everyone from Strait, Willie, George Jones and Randy Travis to Kenny Chesney, Randy Rogers Band, Wade Bowen, Miranda Lambert and more. Notably, he penned one of Strait’s last Top 20 hits, “I Got a Car,” and Randy Houser’s severely underrated “What Whiskey Does.”
So it was only fitting that Strait sing one of his songs, and he performed “I Got A Car,” which was written by Gattis and Tom Douglas and released in November of 2013 as the third single from Strait’s album, Love Is Everything.
While it wasn’t one of Strait’s biggest hits by any means, peaking at #17 on the Billboard US Country Airplay chart, it’s a beautiful song, and I’m sure it was an incredibly special night for George and all of the other inductees who were there, as well.
In December, Strait was also included as one of the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors inductees, and it goes without saying that all of these accolades are incredibly well-deserved, and it’s great seeing him get the love he deserves for his legendary career.
