Great news for Reading Rainbow fans! We’re getting more of the show, which recently had four new episodes released on the YouTube channel KidZuko.
Millions of viewers flocked to YouTube to see Mychal Threets (aka Mychal the Librarian) taking over the mantle of host from LeVar Burton, and the series’ success was enough for Sony Pictures Television to move forward with a 24-episode run.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony and Buffalo Toronto Public Media are behind the project, with Kristen McGregor, whose previous experience involves working on Sesame Street and Ms. Rachel, on board as showrunner. The KidZuko YouTube channel will still get shorter versions of the upcoming run, but the goal is to find a TV network or streaming platform to give Reading Rainbow a home beyond YouTube.
“We’ve been working for several years to bring Reading Rainbow back, and Michael Davies and [Sony Pictures Television’s] Embassy Row have been the ideal partners to help make that vision a reality,” said Tom Calderone, CEO and president of Buffalo Toronto Public Media. “Seeing the impact these first four episodes have already had confirms that the timing is right—and that evolving the series for today’s audiences is both necessary and meaningful.”
This news is great news for me, my daughter, and millions of other families! The new episodes, Sony promises, will feature more books (of course), and also more celebrity drop-ins (some actors we saw in the first four included Ebon Moss-Bachrach visiting an animal shelter and books narrated by John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Adam DeVine, Jamie Chung, and Gabrielle Union).
No news yet on when we’ll see the new Reading Rainbow episodes, or even where we’ll be able to watch them, but it’s some good news to look forward to in the future. [end-mark]
