Ashley McBryde Chokes Up As “What If We Don’t” Becomes The Most Added Song At Country Radio: “This Song Needed Its Moment & It’s Getting It”
Making waves on its first day at country radio.
Ashley McBryde and her team are having a dream Monday, as her single “What If We Don’t” is currently the most-added song at country radio.
The single is the first song from her forthcoming (unofficially announced) fifth studio album, and was written by Ashley along with Terri Jo Box and Randall Clay.
It might sound familiar to longtime fans of McBryde, as it was first released on her independently-released debut EP, Jalopies & Expensive Guitars, back in 2016, before Ashley had a record or publishing deal.
The song is described as an “anthemic, larger-than-life plea” which dares listeners to live without regret, and Ashley says it’s about learning to live with the consequences of life regardless of the outcome:
“‘What If We Don’t’ came to me, Terri Jo Box, and Randall Clay sitting around a fire pit on a back porch, reminiscing on all the moments that we could’ve made a different choice and wondering if we should’ve.
It’s about the leaps of faith that you do or don’t take, and having to learn to live with those consequences either way.”
At the time of the release, Ashley shared that she hopes people relate to the message of overcoming fear and not letting that feeling dictate choices:
“We can’t avoid feeling afraid. But we can make sure fear doesn’t get to make choices for us.”

The song instantly resonated with fans, and today, February 23, the single was sent to country radio. With the song being well-loved and received before heading to country radio, it made for a very successful debut, leaving McBryde at a loss for words.
The “Rattlesnake Preacher” singer took to social media full of emotion to share her gratitude toward country radio for making it the most-added song:
“Can you receive information right now? We’re the most-added country song at country radio right now—#1 most added country song. We got 75 stations! That’s the most we’ve had on any single coming out of the gate.
This is huge. It’s huge for me, it’s huge for John Osbourne, it’s huge for my band, it’s huge for my team at Warner, it’s huge for my team at Q Prime. Thank you. Thank you for the love and the support. This song needed its moment, and it’s getting it. It’s getting it. Thank you.”
John Osbourne plays electric guitar, high-string guitar, mellotron, and Moog on the recording, which explains why McBryde noted that this was a big deal for her longtime friend and colleague to be part of this milestone as well.
McBryde added more thanks for her fans in the caption of the post, writing:
“’What If We Don’t’ is the #1 most added song at country radio. That’s because of YOU. Every single one of you reading this. Thank you for listening, requesting, adding, and believing in this one !”

No one is more deserving of this milestone than McBryde. A true artist through and through, she’s been honing her craft for a long time, and I am sure this recognition from country radio makes all the blood, sweat, and tears to get to this moment feel worth it.
Turn “What If We Don’t” all the way up before you go.
