Singer-Songwriter J.D. Graham Seriously Injured In Catastrophic Car Accident

One of country music’s own needs your prayers right now. Life has never been easy for Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter J.D. Graham. Although music has always been an outlet and a passion of his, he spent the majority of his adult life in the throes of drug addiction, and his dangerous lifestyle came to a head in 2017 when he landed in jail for negligent homicide following a fatal car crash. Since then, though, Graham has proved that no one is too far gone for redemption. During his five-year stint in an Arizona prison, Graham found sobriety, and acknowledging the profound impact music had on his recovery, he started a program to teach songwriting to other prisoners to aide in their rehabilitation. He even recorded  and released his poignant 2019 record Razorwire Sunrise while incarcerated. Now nearly nine years sober, Graham has been writing and touring non-stop, playing his music all across the country for anyone who will listen. But on February 24th, while traveling through New Mexico, he was involved in a catastrophic car accident. Hit by a semi-truck and forced into another semi on the interstate, Graham was reportedly unable to move his limbs at the scene, and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Amarillo where he has remained in the ICU. Texas/Red Dirt media outlet Galleywinter has been keeping fans updated on the matter through Instagram, and shared these chilling photos of Graham’s car in the accident’s aftermath, and it’s clear that he is lucky to still be alive: Galleywinter also shared an update directly from Graham in the hospital: “I’m barely alive here. Thank you guys, I’m still discombobulated, but my daughter said that people were helping out with some things. I’ve got a broken back, broken ribs, broken heart. My dog died in the car that was with me. It’s a tragedy, and thank you guys for the support. I hope to see you guys soon. I’m not too worried about music stuff right now. But I just gotta get better. Just giving you guys an update. Love you.” View this post on Instagram An absolute tragedy. Since Graham is unable to make money from touring to pay his hospital bills, and his wife is unable to work following recent cancer treatments, his daughter set up a GoFundMe to help out. In an outpouring of support from the Red Dirt music family, over $43,000 has already been raised. Though I had heard his name a handful of times, I wasn’t too familiar with Graham’s music until he played a show alongside his close friend Justin Clyde Williams at The Evening Muse here in Charlotte about a month ago. Taking the stage by himself and commanding the room with just his voice and guitar, he amazed me with his storytelling, lyricism, and positive outlook despite his troubled life. I’ve witnessed few artists live that are able to evoke emotion in the crowd, both happy and said, just like Graham did that night. Taking a request from a fan in the crowd, Graham played his heavy song “As For Me” that night, and it has quickly become my favorite in his catalog. Check out a couple more songs of J.D. Graham’s below, and if you have the ability to do so, consider contributing to the GoFundMe linked earlier in this article to aide in his recovery efforts. Either way, let’s pray for a miraculous recovery for an artist who has inspired and helped so many others over the years. The post Singer-Songwriter J.D.
