The U.S. Navy signals intelligence ship USS Liberty was sailing in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula. What followed would become one of the most controversial naval incidents in modern American history. For more than an hour, the ship was attacked by fighter aircraft and motor torpedo boats. Strafing runs, rockets, napalm, and a torpedo strike left the vessel heavily damaged. Communications antennas were destroyed. Fires burned across the deck. A 39-foot hole was torn into the hull. When the attack finally ended, 34 American sailors were dead and 171 were wounded. Official investigations later concluded the strike was a tragic case of mistaken identity.
